Shinkansen E5 inspired toy train – BRIO / IKEA wooden track compatible.
A 3D printable bullet train designed for kids and fully compatible with BRIO and IKEA wooden railway systems.
This long nose Japanese high-speed train was designed for my 3-year-old son who loves Shinkansen trains.
Because of the length and size of the wagon, slopes and descents can be challenging.
They are not impossible, and the train can pass them, but they may be problematic depending on the track layout.
The current model tolerance is set to 0.10 mm.
If it does not fit well for your printer, you can try customizing the model by adjusting the tolerance in the customization tool.
However, you will need to create a new profile and repaint the parts manually.
📏 Dimensions
- Locomotive length: 156 mm
- Wagon length: 146 mm
🔧 Inspiration
For the wheels, bogies, and stabilizer, I took inspiration from this excellent model:
🧲 Hardware Required
Screws
You will need M3 × 10 mm screws. ( You could also use M3 × 8 mm or M3 × 12 mm screws )
- Total screws required for 1 wagon : 12 + 1 per magnet you want to add
Magnets
I used magnets with the following dimensions:
- Diameter: 10 mm
- Height: 4.5 mm
As long as the height is greater than about 3 mm, it should work fine.
🧪 Testing
I tested the train on curves and slopes.
Even though the locomotive is close to the maximum acceptable length, it successfully handled almost all the track obstacles I tested.
🛠 Assembly Guide
I recommend assembling one wagon and the locomotive using the following steps:
1️⃣ Install the wheels on the bogies
- Mount wheels on the 4 bogies
- Use 4 screws per bogie → 16 screws total
⚠️ Important:
Do not overtighten the screws.
The wheels must spin freely on the screw axis.
2️⃣ Install magnets
Attach one magnet to two bogies only.
- 2 screws total
3️⃣ Attach bogies to wagon bases
Attach each bogie to the bottom of the wagon.
- 2 screws
⚠️ Important:
The bogies should be tight enough to stay in place, but still able to rotate about 20° on each side.
4️⃣ Attach stabilizers
Attach the stabilizers to the wagons.
- 2 stabilizers
- 2 screws per stabilizer
5️⃣ Assemble the wagon body
beware, the middle section is delicate
- Insert the middle section into the wagon base :
- Insert the top section into the middle section
6️⃣ Insert decorative parts
Insert the following pieces into the wagon top:
- Cockpit
- Windows
- Door windows
Tip:
If the windows feel a bit loose, you can secure them with a small amount of glue.
Apply a tiny drop of glue on the window first, then clip it into the wagon.
Because the slots are very small, this prevents glue from overflowing.
✅ Final Check
Before using the train, verify that:
- The wheel screws are not too tight
- The bogies rotate freely : Tighten the screw as much as possible while still allowing the bogie to rotate freely.
- All moving parts can move smoothly
This will ensure the train runs properly on the track.
