Description

Pinewood Derby Test & Tuning Ramp – Track-Accurate with Built-In Alignment Tools

Update:  If the connector pins are too tight or too loose, try scaling them in the X and Y to make them fit better.  Just scale and print one till you find the right fit, then print two more with the same scaling.

Fine-tune your Pinewood Derby car like a pro. This custom-designed ramp lets you accurately test, compare, and dial in performance changes before race day. The ramp features the same curved profile as a real aluminum BestTrack-style track and matches standard rail specifications, so how your car behaves here is a reliable preview of its performance on an actual track.

Use the included cone marker to compare cars or measure improvements. Place the cone at the point where last year’s car stopped, then run your new build to see whether it travels farther or tracks straighter. It’s a simple, visual way to evaluate upgrades, wheel prep, alignment adjustments, weight placement, and more.

A built-in sight system makes straight-run testing easy and consistent. Set the cone on a flat floor roughly 15 feet from the end of the ramp, then look through the sight on the ramp to line it up with the target cone. When you release the car, a perfectly aligned build on a level surface should roll straight off the ramp and hit the cone. Any drift gives you immediate feedback on alignment issues.

Once you’ve sighted the ramp and aligned it with the target cone, I recommend taping all four corners of the ramp to the floor. This prevents movement during repeated runs and also helps keep the ramp sections together if you choose not to glue them.

If you do decide to glue the ramp permanently, glue the two flat mating surfaces together—not the alignment dowels. You’ll get a much stronger, cleaner bond by letting the dowels remain unglued and simply serve their purpose as alignment guides.

Whether you're comparing multiple cars, refining alignment, or confirming that bottom-weights won’t scrape on a real track, this ramp gives hobbyists and scouts a reliable, repeatable way to tune their Pinewood Derby racers with confidence.

Final Note: This ramp just makes it easy to give your Pinewood Derby car the same push every time. That way, you can see how well your build turns that starting height (potential energy) into speed and distance (kinetic energy). It’s a simple way to see how efficiently your car runs and where you can make it even better.
