Description
Thumb Brace – Personal 3D-Printable Model
I designed this 3D-printable thumb brace following a partial thumb tendon rupture.
It was created to meet a very specific personal need: temporarily keeping my wrist and thumb immobilized, mainly while my medical splint is being washed and dried.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer
This model is NOT a professional medical device.
It has not been designed, tested, or validated by any healthcare professional.
By downloading and using this model, you acknowledge that:
- I cannot be held responsible for misuse,
- discomfort, injury, or worsening of an existing condition,

Intended Use
- Temporary immobilization of the thumb and wrist
- Personal, short-term use only
- Intended as a backup solution when a prescribed splint is unavailable (washing, drying)
This is not a rehabilitation or long-term medical brace.
Size & Fit
This model fits an average adult male hand, with:
- a circumference of approximately 22–23 cm at the base of the four fingers,
- and a similar circumference at the base of the hand near the thumb.
For me, this version is comfortable and functional.
Customization & Adjustment
The model is easy to adapt:
- by scaling it before printing,
- or by making minor physical cuts or adjustments after printing.
Do not force a poor fit — adapt the model to your morphology.
Fastening Options
You can use:
- short elastic bands, or
- long elastic bands crossed like laces.
- Lacing
- etc.
⚠️ Do not overtighten — excessive compression may cause discomfort or restrict circulation.
Comfort Recommendation
For improved comfort, I strongly recommend wearing:
- a mesh sleeve, or
- a thin sock or fabric layer,
between your skin and the brace.
This greatly reduces friction and improves wearability.
Printing Notes
I printed this model:
- in TPU (default settings),
- flat on the build plate,
- without any supports.
- There are 2 small holes to make cuts once printed, especially usefull to adapt forearms.
This setup worked perfectly on a Bambu Lab P1S.
Unlike many downloadable brace models, this one felt comfortable to me even without heat forming or thermoforming to the hand shape.
Summary
- ✔️ Functional for personal, temporary use
- ✔️ Prints cleanly in TPU, flat, no supports
- ❌ Not a medical device
- ❌ Not a universal solution
- ✔️ Easily adjustable
- ⚠️ Use entirely at your own risk
If you know what you’re doing, this model can be useful.
