Description

This is a two-piece adapter plate designed to mount a Vortex Defender ST red dot sight onto the FN 502 pistol slide. The design prioritizes alignment, rigidity, and repeatable mounting when assembled correctly.

Design Overview

  • Two-part construction:
The adapter consists of two separate printed components that must be bonded together prior to mounting.
  • Snap-fit alignment:
The smaller component is designed to snap into place on the main body. When fully seated, the corners should be flush, confirming correct alignment.
  • Fitment check (required):
Before applying any adhesive, it is strongly recommended to dry-fit both parts and verify:
    • Proper snap engagement
    • Flush corners
    • Correct overall fit on the slide
Proceed with adhesive application only after confirming proper fitment.
  • Adhesive bonding required:
For best performance, the two parts should be permanently joined using a high-strength adhesive.
During development and testing, Henkel Loctite 444 was used, and the assembly was left undisturbed until the adhesive was fully cured before mounting the optic.
  • Adhesive application recommendation:
    • Apply a small dab of adhesive in all four snap holes
    • Apply a thin bead down the width of the part to ensure proper wetting
    • A small amount of squeeze-out is expected and desirable
    • Any excess adhesive can be wiped away with a Q-tip or similar applicator
  • Proper curing of the adhesive is critical to overall strength and durability.

Hardware Requirements

  • Mounting screw:
    • Thread: 6-40
    • Length: 12.7 mm
  • This specific screw length is required for proper engagement when used with this adapter plate.

Printing & Material Notes

  • Demonstration material:
    • PLA
    • 100% infill
  • The PLA test mount successfully completed 100 rounds of live-fire testing and remained solid throughout.
  • Recommended filament:
    • Glass-fiber-reinforced nylon (PA-GF) is strongly recommended for best long-term performance, heat resistance, and creep resistance.
  • PLA is suitable for demonstration or testing purposes, but PA-GF is preferred for real-world use.

Testing Results & Known Behavior

  • After approximately 100 rounds, carbon dust accumulation was observed on the red dot.
    • This is a normal byproduct of firing and is currently the only known issue associated with this mount.
    • No structural degradation or loosening was observed during testing.
  • A photo showing the carbon buildup is provided at the end of the image gallery for reference.
