Description

Simple Gate Latch

(no AI was used in the making of this design or description below)

Updates:

23/12/2025 - Have beefed up the walls, filleted sharp corners and added an ergonomic finger loop to the D-ring.

24/12/2025 - Minor tweak to pin tolerances.

20/01/2026 - Made the smaller pin and associated holes beefier to better handle shearing stress.

This is a very simple garden gate latch that's easy to print, easy to install, and easy to use. It is self locking, and to open you simply lift the D-ring as per the gif below.

Print Instructions

  • Print in PETG or any other material suitable for outdoor use. I've also included a latching bar in the print bed, as I made this to replace an existing hinge.
  • No supports needed.
  • Printed with 5 walls and no-infill for max strength.

Assembly

  • Screw the latching bar onto the gate, and line up the “T-bar” so it sits slightly higher than the latching bar when closed.
  • Place the “D-Ring” inside the “T-Bar” and line up the smaller holes.
  • Slot the smaller pin through the “T-Bar” and "D-ring", and use the “O-ring” to fully assemble. The O-ring should press fit onto the pin, but you can secure it with additional superglue.
  • Slot the larger pin into the larger hole of the D-ring.

Note that both pins will fit pretty snugly, and you might need a bit of extra force with a pair of plyers to squeeze them through their respective holes.
