Microgreen Self-Watering DIY (Bottle-Wick)

Summary/Brief Description:

Revolutionize your microgreen cultivation with this easy-to-print, self-watering hydroponic system! This clever design uses standard bottles (glass or sturdy PET bottles) as a large, low-maintenance water reservoir based on the capillary principle (wick system). Perfect for beginners and experienced gardeners who want to grow fresh, nutrient-rich microgreens right on their windowsill – without daily watering.

Key Features:

  • Self-Watering (Wick System): The roots of the microgreens constantly draw the necessary moisture from the reservoir via the capillary principle. A 1L or 1.5L bottle is usually sufficient for the entire growth period, so you can forget about watering for days!
  • Flexible Upcycling Design: The bottle adapter is designed to be suitable for both glass bottles (functionally and aesthetically superior) and sturdy, thick-walled PET bottles, thereby reducing waste.
  • Modular & Scalable: The system has a modular design and can be easily expanded by placing multiple trays seamlessly next to each other.
  • Soilless and Clean Cultivation: Ideal for clean cultivation in the kitchen. In addition to fleece or hemp mats, unused toilet paper (no recycled paper due to potential toxins!) can also be used as a growing medium.
  • Germination Option (Dark Germinators): The black cover (optional) creates optimal darkness and humidity for the germination phase and promotes rapid, even sprouting of the seeds.
  • Stable Construction: The bottle adapter ensures a secure and firm hold for the inverted water bottle.

System Components (Printed Parts):

  1. Water Reservoir Tray (Base): The bottom tray that forms the water reservoir and supplies the wick system.
  2. Seed Tray / Sieve Attachment: The attachment with a fine grid structure on which the growing medium and seeds are placed. The roots grow through the grid.
  3. Black Germination Cover (optional): For covering during the initial germination phase.
  4. Edge Cover

Instructions for Use (Summary):

  1. Print the parts.
  2. Insert the bottle holder into the Reservoir Tray.
  3. Fill a cleaned 1L or 1.5L bottle (glass or sturdy PET bottle) with water and place it upside down into the holder.
  4. Place your growing medium (toilet paper, fleece, or similar – no recycled materials!) into the Sieve Tray and moisten it lightly.
  5. Scatter the microgreen seeds (e.g., radishes, broccoli) densely onto the medium.
  6. Place the Sieve Tray onto the Reservoir Tray. The roots will grow down through the holes and draw water from the reservoir.
  7. Cover the seeds (especially dark germinators) with the black germination cover until they have sprouted (approx. 2-4 days), then remove the cover.
  8. Place the system in a bright location.

Printing Notes:

  • Material: PETG is strongly recommended for best water tightness and UV resistance. (PLA is possible, but less durable in humid conditions).
  • Important: The Reservoir Tray must be printed 100% watertight (use a higher number of perimeters and top/bottom layers if necessary). For added safety, the bottom tray can be subsequently sealed with a food-safe varnish.
  • Bottles: For functionality, glass bottles with a matching thread are ideal. For PET bottles, please choose a sturdy, thick-walled version.
