1. Clarification
Hold the divining blocks in your cupped hands, clarify to the deities your name, date and time of birth, address, and the matter for which you seek divine guidance, asking one thing at a time. After clarifying, wait for several tens of seconds to allow the deities to deliberate, then proceed with the act of casting

2. Casting the Shengbei
Cup the divining blocks in your palms, lower your head slightly and hold them with both hands. Form your hands into a butterfly shape, raise them to your brow, then lightly toss them upwards and let them fall to the ground, observing the combination of face up and face down

3. Three types of results from casting the Shengbei:
① Shengjiao
One block faces up and one faces down (one yin and one yang), meaning the deity approves and the requested matter is feasible
② Xiaojiao
Both blocks face up (both yang, meaning both sides are flat), meaning the statement is unclear or the time is not yet ripe; or the question posed has its own predetermined outcome; or the deity's decision is not yet made, and further inquiry can be made
③ Kujiao
Both blocks face down (both yin, meaning both sides are convex), meaning the deity does not approve of the requested matter, and it is not advisable to ask again
