Hiccup’s sword, known as Inferno, is one of the most distinctive weapons in the How to Train Your Dragon universe. First appearing in the television series Race to the Edge, it was built to give Hiccup more independence and protection when facing dragon hunters, rather than relying solely on Toothless. Unlike a traditional sword, Inferno is a multi-functional tool that reflects Hiccup’s inventive nature. The blade is retractable, folding neatly into a compact hilt, making it practical for him to carry despite his prosthetic leg.
What makes Inferno remarkable is its ability to ignite. The sword channels stored Hideous Zippleback gas, which Hiccup keeps in small canisters, and with a click of the hilt the gas is released and sparked, transforming the weapon into a blazing sword. Later in Race to the Edge, he upgrades it further, allowing the blade to harness other dragon powers such as Skrill lightning, giving it a striking blue-purple glow in contrast to its normal fiery orange.
Inferno appears not only in the series but also in How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Hidden World, where it serves both as a weapon and a symbol. Just like Hiccup’s prosthetic leg and Toothless’s tail fin, the sword embodies his identity as an innovator, combining human craftsmanship with dragon abilities. More than a means of defense, it represents his philosophy of working with dragons rather than against them, using their strengths as inspiration instead of weapons of destruction.
