Description

After I made the Fish Mobile a friend suggested a Kangaroo version, why not! So here is the kitsch Kangaroo version. Perhaps you are an Australian expat feeling homesick and this can help you with that.

This mobile shows the iconic Australian windmill used to pump water from artesian sources in the outback on farms surrounded by a mob of Kangaroos.

Design considerations

One small detail - as the center of gravity line passed through a gap in the blades at the top of the windmill, I added a Boomerang with the mounting hole +1 more Australiana.

The entire mobile fits on one build plate of an X1C - 250x250x250.

Print Considerations

  • Surface quality - The Print Profile uses 0.12 thickness as it results in a better quality top finish. You can consider setting Process > Global > Quality > Ironing - Top Surface to improve the finish further.
  • Test it - Test print a single fish to see if the top surface meets your standards.
  • Time - The whole mobile takes about 1 hour to print. With ironing it will be considerably longer.
  • Scaling - I had to scale the Windmill to 75% so it would fit on a single plate. This meant the Boomerang attachment hole at the top doesn't form a complete circle. You can choose to print the Windmill at a larger scale 80-90% and this will be resolved. Although, at 75% it does work as shown.

Assembly

This will be easier if you work on a large flat surface, like an empty dining table. There's 22 tiny knots to tie, so does take a while to assemble. I found using forceps to help tie the knots makes this step a lot faster.

  1. Lay the mobile on a table as per the layout you want. There is one large, two medium and two small hangers - you want them balanced on each side. In the instance below. Be mindful the Kangaroos on the smaller hanger will collide if tied at the same height, same with any two Kangaroos on the outside of nearest hangers, so make sure no kangaroos adjacent fish are at the same height. This is one reason to lay them out first. They will also collide with the Windmill, so keep them below and you will be OK.

  2. With the mobile arranged, tie the Kangaroos onto the hangers and the hangers onto each other.  I work from the bottom up. Tie the lowest Kangaroo to its hanger, making sure to keep the distance you wanted. Top down would work too, but whatever you prefer, be consistent in your method, so you can keep the model arranged neatly. Its easy to get into a mess.
  3. Keep out of reach of cats! :)
