Meet the “Shelf Guard” Version 1.0 — born from the battlefield that is my 3 year old son Alex’s room.
Why I Made This ---- Because chaos shouldn’t be a storage option!
Picture this: we tidy, we organise, the shelves are pristine… and then, not long after, Alex swoops in, yanks every storage box off the Kallax, and redecorates the floor with their contents. Then, with a straight face, he surveys his work, declares “there’s mess everywhere… it’s gone everywhere,” and promptly leaves because, of course, it’s too messy.
After one too many of these tactical strikes, I decided my sanity needed a bodyguard. Enter this round disc, designed to click into the cross‑point of those box shelf cubbies, acting as a polite but firm “nope” — only one box can be removed at a time. It’s not just a print — it’s a peace treaty between tidy adults and tiny chaos agents.
“Protecting your shelves, your sanity, and your floor… one box at a time.”
How I Put It Together
The disc should be simply printed, decorate it if you wish. With a small drillbit i put a small ‘pilot’ hole in the intersection of the box shelf and the screw which is bigger than this hole will have something to screw into without breaking the wood. I used a standard screw, nothing special to attach the disc to the shelf. The screw was 5cm long (50mm) and about 4mm on the width of the shaft of the screw. behind the disc i added 2 plastic washers between the disc and the shelf on the screw and again just small 2mm thick washers.
I bought from amazon - sourcing map Plunger Latches, 6.5x55mm/0.26x2.17inch Steel Spring-Loaded Bolt Plunger Latch for Furniture Bed Door, 4Pcs : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools
This will fit through the already present hole in the disc. A little of the plunger would stick out the back however the washers help this not get caught. You would need to screw the plunger into cube block which has had a modifier block added to give this section maximum infill so the screw has something to grip to.
This works best if you have a Shelfie Guard on each cross section as you then have the disc blocking at least 2 corners of the boxes. Its simple but so far effective. Children tend to be able to be able to do one of the motions like pull the plunger or move left to right however not simultaneously. By the time he figures it out, hopefully he will no longer be a tiny tornado!
If i have missed anything, please do ask as this is one of my first real creation posts.
