Hello everyone,
With my Golf 2 with an AKW gearbox, the problem recently occurred that reverse gear could no longer be engaged. This was extremely annoying, especially when parking or putting the vehicle away. The solution was to readjust the gearshift using the original adjustment gauge – this is available online from approx. 7 € plus shipping. However, I am providing the gauge to you here free of charge.
Procedure:
- First, loosen the clamp on the gear linkage (coming from the gear lever). Depending on the engine, this is best reached from above between the bulkhead and the intake manifold (see Figure 3).
- Remove the gear gaiter and gear gaiter holder and put the gearbox in neutral.
- Insert the adjustment gauge as shown in Figure 1. It fixes the gear lever in the correct initial position according to manufacturer specifications.
- It is best to work in pairs: one person holds the gauge while the other tightens the clamp in the engine compartment again.
This guide applies to a Golf 2 with an NZ engine and AKW gearbox. Depending on the engine and gearbox variant, access may differ. As described in the drawing (Figure 2), the gauge can also be used with selected gearboxes in the Golf 3 – however, versions with a Bowden cable are excluded.
The gauge with labeling is also available as step and 3mf upon request
