Herringbone Resin Casting Pen Blank
Print Profile(1)

Description
A mold for epoxy resin inspired by the herringbone woodworking pattern. Sized 1" x 1" x 6" it can be used for pretty much any pen kit, and with the choices that 3D printing and resin offer you can make some incredible patterns that would be impossible for natural materials to replicate! The options are truly limitless.
Some info about the model:
The herringbone ribs are 0.8mm thick, which is enough to survive the pen turning process but not enough to dominate the pattern. The outer walls are 1.5mm thick, which is plenty to survive the heat generated during resin cure, drilling, and gluing without deformation
I printed this with 100% infill using the rectilinear pattern since I needed this to be guaranteed solid plastic for turning on the lathe. As for model orientation, it can be printed flat on the bottom with no supports, or it can be printed vertically with supports only needed for the top flat surface. If you don't want to waste the material on a tree support, simply cut off the end of the model and it'll print just fine without supports. If you do want supports for that top flat surface, I used tree (auto) to generate them and it worked beautifully.
One of the most powerful options this model offers is printing it vertically and using the painting feature in Bambu Studio to make the pattern change color as you print higher up the tower. Since it needs no supports except at the very top you can make some really stunning transitions along the piece. I haven't done this personally yet, but I will be soon! I'll be sure to update this post as soon as I do!
The plate has been sized for an X1C since that's what I'm running at home but it can be made with any size printer Bambu offers.
