Modular Roller Shutter System with Adapter Connection and Backdraft Louvers for Open Windows (ALM-174)

This project presents a modular, fully 3D-printed window adapter for mobile air conditioners. Designed for windows with roller shutter guides (3 cm deep) and a total width of 174 cm. The system combines precision fit, thermal efficiency, and lasting stability.

📐 Technical Details

  • Segment Count: 7 standard segments at 205 × 240 mm
  • Adapter Segment: 230 mm wide, with an OVAL opening for the original adapter (snaps in)
  • Connecting Segment: 200 mm wide, for fine adjustment of the total length
  • Height of all Modules: 240 mm
  • Connection System: Tongue and groove
  • Backdraft Flap: ball-bearing louvers, purely mechanical (gravity closure), primarily rain protection + slight backflow prevention
  • Material: Everything printed in ABS (black), then painted with white heat-resistant paint
  • Recommendation: Print directly in light colors and use ASA (UV and heat resistant)

🧪 Thermal Background

The system reduces heat ingress through:

  • White outer surface (reflection of infrared radiation)
  • Seamless connection (prevention of convection)
  • Segmented structure (minimal heat conduction)

The louver flap primarily serves as rain protection, but also helps slightly against backflow of hot air.

🧰 Assembly Instructions

  • Top and bottom of each segment are cold-welded (ABS + acetone slurry)
→ Unevenness can be compensated for in this way
  • Tongue and groove system: cleanly connectable with good printing
→ Alternatively glue or secure with screws (drill holes in tongue and groove)
  • Sealing: Self-adhesive insulation tape from the hardware store recommended
  • Adapter connection: The original oval adapter fits exactly into the receptacle, no module for round hose planned (on request if necessary)

I live in the Marshal Islands and this print is by far the best one I have found when we had to switch to portable AC Units. it has held up decently well with the rain, sun and salt considering it was printed from left over petg and pla. I’m gonna be printing the rest of it since it’s been in my window for about a week and it has kept it way cooler than the rest of the prints out there I have tried so now it’s time to go all in.

WOW. Thank you very much for your words. It makes me very happy to know that my hours at the PC designing this model were worth it and that it will make your space cooler.
