This is an updated v1.1 version that has more spacing in the threads! Some folks were having issues with the threads being too tight, so I redesigned the threads to be looser. Screwing the spool to the cardboard core tightly should still make it stick, and of course the pin will ensure nothing inadvertently unscrews.

This reusable spool is a newly designed (not a scan or remix) reusable spool for cardboard filament spool cores. This spool holder uses a screw thread design so it can fit cores of any width between 47mm to 68mm.
I created this spool since cardboard spool cores vary in width by manufacturer (and sometimes within a manufacturer). This can cause the filament to get caught in the side of the spool. Yes, I know we are supposed to spread out the filament after locking the spool in place, but sometimes that doesn't work all that well. So since this spool uses threads, it can handle spool cores of any width (between abot 47mm and 68mm). I also designed the spool walls to be strong enough to not let the filament slip down the sides.
As with all reusable spools, if you are going to put these in a filament dryer, use PETG or something else that won't deform under the dryer heat.
There are currently three variations that are mixed/matched:
- Cardboard Core Inner Diameter:
- 82mm: For Bambu and bambu-like spools (Elegoo in particular, maybe others)
- 76mm: For Eryone cores, maybe others.
- Spool Outer Disc Diameter
- 200mm: Fits AMS and AMS Lite. This is the same diameter as the Bambu reusable spools
- 179mm: Prints on the A1 Mini. Fits the AMS Lite only.
- Wall Type
- “Mass Reduction” holes vs. solid walls. The solid version uses about 15% more material, but prints about 15% faster.
- Both types are included with each print profile.
Other features:
- The tab that secures the cardboard spool core is triangular and wedge shaped, so it will grab and hold a spool core that doesn't have a notch without the need to cut the notch in the cardboard. However the tab is sized to fit an existing notch in the cardboard like the Bambu spool cores have.
- There is a locking pin that ensures the holder won't unscrew during use. The pin engages about every 2.5 degrees of rotation, so its easy to find just the right tightness of the spool and lock. When using cardboard spool cores, sometimes I don't use the pin since tightening the spool holder tightly to the cardboard spool seems to be enough. I always use the pin when rewinding other spools (see next bullet)
- A filament hole through the center so this spool can be used without a cardboard spool core (e.g. to rewind an existing spool). Use the locking pin to make sure it doesn't loosen during rewinding or use.
- The inner hole is 53.5mm, so it should fit on the AMS lite (though I don't have one so I haven't check personally)
- The spool sides and pin are labeled for the spool core size they fit.
