Story:
Once believed to be a death mask taken from a cast of the deceased's face, it is now thought to have been derived from a cast of a sculptural portrait of Dante, which has since been lost over time. In 1911, it was donated to the City of Florence by Alessandro D'Ancona, who had received it as a gift in 1901 from the widow of the famous English Dante scholar Seymour Kirkup. According to D'Ancona's account, the mask was discovered by the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini around 1830 in Ravenna, where the poet died in exile and was buried in 1321.
Another theory links the mask to a sculpture of the poet that originally came from his tomb and, according to a historical source, was located in Florence between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It is said to have been gifted by the Archbishop of Ravenna to the sculptor Giambologna. It has also been suggested that the lost portrait may have been created by Tullio Lombardo, who was active at the tomb in Ravenna and at the ancient Basilica of San Francesco between 1483 and 1525.
Before his exile in 1302, Dante Alighieri held various political roles in Florence, including that of Prior from June 15 to August 15, 1300.
The model is easy to print and has a few easily removable supports. Use a small screwdriver to remove them under the chin, just pry slightly. (see photo).
