Gridfinity Spool Storage System

My goal has always been to create the perfect blend of organisation and function for the 3D printing workspace. This spool holder was born from my own need to keep filament dry, organised, and ready to print. Based on feedback from the community and my continued use, I've gone back to the design to refine the key components, to make the entire system more robust and user-friendly.

 

What's New in This Update?

I've focused on enhancing the assembly process and expanding compatibility. Here are the key upgrades:

  • Improved Roller & Pin System: The assembly pins are now tapered and the holes on the drawer have been widened by 0.2mm for a much smoother fit. Furthermore, the rollers now have extra clearance to accommodate a wider variety of filament spool sizes.
  • Threaded Feeder Puck: For a more secure and reliable connection, the filament feeder puck is now threaded and screws directly into the drawer.
  • Redesigned Ring Pull: The ring pull now more flexible, making it easier to insert, and stays securely in place without needing any glue.
  • New Print Profile Options: There are two new print profiles. You can now print a version with a tilting drawer for even easier access, or a Gridfinity-compatible gridded lid, allowing you to better stack other Gridfinity modules on top of your spool holder.

 

Core Features

  • Direct-to-Printer Feeding: Designed to feed filament directly from the box to your printer.
  • Hygrometer Slot: Fits a standard circular digital hygrometer to monitor humidity.
  • Front-Loading Door: Easily access and swap out your spools.
  • Desiccant Compartment: A dedicated tray for desiccant packets to keep your filament dry.
  • Fully Gridfinity Compatible: Stacks and integrates seamlessly with your existing Gridfinity setup.

     

ASSEMBLY

  • Remove custom support material
  • Desiccant tray snaps into place
  • Align drawer lid groves with the channels and carefully slide into place 

     

 

 

 (V2) ASSEMBLY

  • Carefully insert bearings into each end of the rollers
  • Place rollers in cavity under spool drawer
  • Align with holes and push pins through to secure rollers to drawer
  • To remove rollers: use punch to push pin through (space provided behind bearings)
  • Ring pull, remove any printing defects from the hole and apply even pressure to snap into place, may need to sand down the hole if it printed a bit ruff.

 

 

 

INSERT DRAWER

  • Ensure the rails/groves are free from lose filament
  • Align drawer groves with box rails and slide in. 
  • Be careful as a miss alignment might damage the box.

 

 

 

Please note

  • While It's not a completely sealed the humidity is maintained around 30% (55% outside) with fresh desiccant. 

  • The rollers will engage with spools that have a diameter of between 195mm - 200mm. Smaller spools may not benefit.

 

A Quick Note on Printing & Bed Adhesion

A few users have noted that large, flat parts like this can sometimes peel or warp at the corners during printing. This shrinkage can cause the drawer to bind when inserted. To ensure a perfectly flat and functional print, I highly recommend the following:

  • Use a Brim if necessary: This is the most effective way to increase bed adhesion and prevent the corners of the model from lifting.
  • Clean Your Build Plate: A clean, oil-free print surface is essential for good first-layer adhesion.
  • Avoid Drafts: A stable ambient temperature around the printer helps prevent uneven cooling and shrinkage.
