Can you help me understand the print orientation? Wouldn't it be stronger printed perpendicular to the stress lines, which are presumably experienced vertically as it bends to accommodate the tablet?

You are right! But the main issue is that these two red-circled areas are really tiny. Positioning them as illustrated here would make them easy to break.
