Description

[5/16/25] UPDATE: Full version now free for all.  This post will be left up for now, but just go download it here:

The Searz Tower is a massive, easy-to-print, low-filament-use skyscraper.  The tower design was inspired by the Willis Tower (formerly, and more commonly, referred to as the Sears Tower) in Chicago, IL.  At a 1:375 scale, the full tower is a staggering size - over 1.4 m [4.5 ft] tall - having thousands of windows and other carefully crafted architectural design elements spanning from top to bottom.  The Searz Tower features an efficient, thin-walled design coupled with internal bracing structures to DRASTICALLY reduce filament use and eliminate warping typically associated with large prints.

JUST THE TIP [FREE]:

The free version posted here includes only bill of material (BOM) items 5-10, per sheet 3 of the drawing.   Full version to be released soon, which will be fully compatible with items posted here.

PRINTER SIZE REQUIREMENT:

FDM printer able to accommodate pieces approximately 173 mm X 173 mm X  288 mm in size is required.  Model can be scaled larger or smaller (e.g., via a slicer), but certain features may not print as intended.

FEATURES:

  • Efficient no-support, thin-walled design having internal bracing structures for ease of printing and drastically reduced filament use typically associated with printing large building structures. Full prototype was successfully printed without supports, using less than 1.5 kg of filament for all pieces.
  • 6 printable pieces which are fully compatible with other pieces in the full version.
  • Press-fit connection scheme, with a design clearance provided between all adjacent pieces - eliminating the need for fasteners or adhesives (of course, you can glue pieces together to make the structure permanent).
  • Walls and internal bracing designed to accommodate 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm nozzles.

FUTURE MODIFICATIONS:
- a version of this design is currently in development to accommodate an internal light, turning this tower into a lamp. Currently, light does not shine through the windows. Buyers of the full version will also receive the future, lamp-compatible version at no additional cost, when released.
