Description

A simple filament spool winder that is meant to be bolted onto a base (to save some plastic and time). For that I used some leftover 2020 vslot extrusions but you can also use a wooden board or something.

I needed this to transfer filament onto spools that are compatible with the AMS. I needed it quick and didn't want to waste time and filament on something elaborate. So here is a minimal setup to wind filament onto a new spool. I hope you find it useful :-) Please let me know what you think. Suggestions are welcome.

Variants

  • Spool holder legs M8 closed
  • Spool holder legs M8 open
  • Spool holder legs PVC40 (can only be used for the donor spool)

Additional hardware needed

  • an M8 bolt or threaded rod of 15cm
  • some M8 nuts (2 or 4 depending on the variant you use)
  • these fantastic spool cones by MadGutts
  • piece of PTFE tube to use as a buffer (optional)
  • Electric dill for winding (optional)
  • tape (for attaching filament to the receiving spool)

Usage

  • first mount the spools:
    • put the donor spool on the PVC pipe
    • put the PVC pipe onto the PVC pipe mount
    • put the M8 nuts into the spool cones
    • put the receiving spool on the threaded rod by tightening it between the spool cones
    • put the threaded rod onto the mount
  • guide the filament from the donor through the PTFE tube to the receiving spool
    • ensure the filament path is straight en unconstrained
  • use the tape to attach the filament to the receiving spool core
  • take an electric drill and clamp it onto the M8 rod.
  • Gently start winding. Avoid sudden jumps in speed.
  • Manually guide the filament back and forth using the PTFE tube wind it evenly

What about spools >1kg?

Note this respooler is mainly designed for 1kg spools. For heavier spool I'd suggest stronger legs (try 6 walls, 50% infill) and for larger diameter spool you could scale the legs accordingly.
