The Ultimate Dice

… a customisable dice,  choose a Tile and click it in!

The back story

Some time ago I designed a TicTacToe Dice game which I tested out with our grandchildren, aged 2 & 3.

I quickly noticed that rather than going for three O's or X's in a row, they had much more fun putting all of them in one block of 9 - all O's or all X's.  It kept them entertained for about 10mins, which isn't too bad for their age

So, with this nugget of information I decided to create a new version of the dice, this time with click-on tiles that display different logos

The design challenge was to make it look like a normal dice, but have the ability to pop out the tiles when you want to click in a new one. After a few draft designs, I came up with the idea of a floating central sphere, it is precisely sized to allow you to simply push one side of the dice to pop-out the tile on the opposite side

I also created a comprehensive set of motifed Tiles which include, numbers, letters, shapes and logos. Over time I'll create a few more. If you have a particular request, please comment below

How does it work?

  • Print the dice with supports enabled - pull away the supports and tidy up any straglers. The sphere should freely rotate in every direction, and not fall out of the cube

  • Print 6 of your favourite Tiles. If you use Bambu Studio use the Paint Tool to colour the logos and frame. They are raised from the top 1mm of each tile, just paint by layer. Alternatively print them all in white and simply paint it with a paint brush (water colour or acrylic) or use a felt tip pen  - why not involve the children to paint them too??

  • Align one tile into the recessed space on the dice, then place it, face down on a flat surface and push down. It should click into place. Rotate the dice and do the same for the remaining 5 sides

  • If you want to replace a tile after clicking in all 6. Just push the tile opposite to the one you want to release, use firm pressure and it will eject itself from the other side. Its pretty entertaining, it does pop out at some speed. If you are going to use this dice for very young toddlers, I'd recommend gluing in the tiles

  • I've included a tray which you can use for storage and to play games with, such as TicTacToe. Use your imagination for different types of games

  • Tip: For the “grown-ups” I've created two special Tiles ‘Wine’ & ‘Beer’ - just for those occasions when you can't make up your mind and need to roll a dice :)

Do you know what a Boost Token is?

If you download models from MakerWorld.com it is likely that you've got some boost tokens in your account

They are awarded for completing certain tasks, such as downloading a model

It's likely that you have quite a few, but may not be aware of them

Tokens typically have an expiry date and many ppl do let them expire and don't use them - its a shame, but they're easy to overlook ;)

When you see a ‘Boost Me’ section, like the one below and click it, you will be able to gift a creator a boost of points, you can boost several times too

After a period of time these build up and the grateful receiver can exchange them for a growing list of rewards, such as filament, maker kits and more

Its a great way to say thank you!
