Description

If you like my models, please like, follow, share, download, boost, rate and all the amazing good stuff!

This one has been years in the making:

the Mini Marble Music Machine!

This is a desktop version of the incredible machines built by Martin from Wintergatan. I have been hugely inspired by him and always wanted to create my own version. This started years ago but the Marble Run Contest finally gave me a deadline to push on with this project!

So here it is:

Sadly I did not yet receive enough marbles so that is why I muted channels and only have a three note song, but up to nine notes are programmable!

(I will make a better recording shortly, quite a lot of noise reverb in the kitchen)

Programmable music rolls LINK

In the print profiles you can find the original Marble Machine song by Wintergatan (8 tracks) and Mary had a little Lamb (3 tracks) that I adapted to work with the very limited amount of marbles I had.

To create your own music roll there is a customizable model available created by @DrJones where you can plug in your own songs and creations and you are more then welcome to share your models as print profiles on this page!

The roll can fit 64 notes, they are divided into 8 bars with 8 eighth notes (beats). In the top you fill in which notes you are using from left to right (no repeats of the exact same character, but you can do a “c” and a "C"). And then you fill in for every 8th note(s) which note should be played.

You can not do the same note consecutively, they have to at least be a fourth note (two “beats”) apart. And a lot of repeats is also not advisable since you can run the que empty in a short time.

The Xylophone plates

I have tested multiple xylophones for this model and the one I decided on is widely available from a lot of different brands and resellers in different colors. Just search for Xylophone or Glockenspiel and I believe all these will work:

Klokkenspel 25 tonig - in kunststof Koffertje - Inclusief 2 drumstokjes en zilverkleurige toonplaten.

Mine was pretty well tuned, I can't guarantee that for yours. I got mine second hand but these seem to all come from the same manufacturer.

Other parts:

From Bambu (see below):

12 mm marbles (150pcs)

10mm M3 bolts (10 pcs)

30mm M3 bolts (10 pcs)

Non Bambu:
M5 rods 244mm (3 pcs)

M5 (lock)nuts (6 pcs)

Optional: stick on felt/rubber/something to dampen the falling marbles

Instructions:

Assembly is pretty straight forward. Make sure to work the bolts in carefully not to damage the print!

  1. Place the escapement gears in the top and thread one rod end through. Nut on both sides but keep it loose
  2. Place the top on the base and mount with M3x30 bolts. Not all nine are necessary, I only use 3. Screw them in carefully!
  3. Place the escapement readers and thread a rod end through. Nut on both sides but keep it loose
  4. Assemble the marble lift with two M3x10 bolts
  5. Place the marble lift and mount it with 3 m3x10 bolts
  6. Place the gear between the lift and the base, use 2 M3x10 bolts but don't tighten fully, keep it free spinning.
  7. For X1 and P1 only: assemble the Archimedes screw with 1 M3x30 bolt
  8. Place the Archimedes screw. There is one marble at the bottom center that is used as a smooth bearing
  9. If I didn't forget anything you can now place your music roll and thread the last rod end through.
  10. Create music!

It was a tight squeeze to get this model ready for the closing of the contest, I will update this page in the coming weeks!

And other than that

Happy printing!

fun print. Some of the marbles were hanging up slightly so I had to extend the follower on the action 1.5mm and the marbles flow much better across the top. The uploaded "Mary had a little lamb" doesn't have the right notes so I had to remake it. Assembly was easier than expected. Thank you for designing this. I still need to trim the a thread but you can assemble with standard 250mm rods from Amazon.

That is awesome that you printed and assembled it! I have improved mine with a catch tray add on to almost completely eliminate bouncing out marbles, I'll try to add it to the print files. The reason mary has a little lamb is different is because I made it when I had too little marbles and the repeated notes wouldn't recharge fast enough. If you make any new scrolls you are welcome to upload the print profiles! You extended the follower by 1.5mm, do you mean the pointy thing that rides over the music scroll? That seems like a lot, I will experiment with it. I did tweak the length slightly but I believe I uploaded the most recent design. Thanks for printing, sharing and boosting!

yes, the pointy thing that rides over the music roll. doing this keep the marbles higher and they didn't seem to catch as much and would continue to roll down. I am not sure how to upload the scroll to makerworld. still new to all this. thanks again!

Really depends on the size! I have I believe 22mm width plates with a thickness of 2mm

is there a easy way to make the music rolls?

Yes, it's in the description, but it also depends on your definition of easy. Good luck!

Wow! The idea that we could have some Wintergatan magic in our own home in a mini version is fantastic! it is so cool that you designed this. I am not sure we will print it because we are brand new to 3D printing, but I am very happy are one of the winners!

Yes, a very little slice of that magic is available now! I wouldn't dive into multi-day printing projects at the start either, easy into it and maybe you'll be back! Thanks for the boost!

Taking a long shot here, but is it possible to create an A1 Mini profile for this whimsical music piece? I absolutely adore all kinds of mechanical musical instruments and would love to be able to print this!

I'm sorry, at first I really wanted to keep it below 200*200 but even that proved impossible. You can split it up but parts like the music roll will be hard to split into printable pieces. Thanks for the interest though!

Just got back in the country—sorry for the late reply, and thanks for yours! Figured that might be the case. Oh well, another reason to consider upgrading to A1 for a larger bed!

This is awesome, the perfect application of 3D printing! Always thought it’d be cool to build a marble machine but figured I’d never have the time or space to build one myself, a compact version like this should be perfect.

Gotta get it over 9000! 😂😂 Unfortunately I’ll eventually help drag that down once I actually print it 😢

Good Work! Love the design and ingenuity! Because of the work and parts required, I won't be building one 😔 but you have my boost for the amazing work!

Thanks for the boost! Yep, it's a beast to print and assemble. Nothing compared to designing it though, but I also get more satisfaction for it :) I also thought my magnetic Catan Globe wouldn't see many repeats and still some people have built one, so who knows!

Have my boost. Such originality must be supported

Thanks, that means a lot! It won't get much prints/traction because of the sheer amount of work to make one, so the boosts are well appreciated for these kind of models :)
