Description

I designed this round self-watering plant pot to elegantly display my indoor plants while keeping maintenance low and reducing my risk of overwatering them. I put quite a bit of thought and intention into this design, so I hope you all can enjoy it as well!

Note: This is the ribbed version of my self-watering planter which offers a different outer-shell appearance. You can find the smooth version here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/776835#profileId-713587

Features

  • Low-Maintenance Self-Watering Design
  • Wicking Legs for Capillary Action
  • Screw-In Legs for Easier Printing
  • Drainage Holes to Prevent Pot Flooding
  • Water Reservoir Tray with Cutout to Prevent Pot Flooding
  • Clip-On Water Tray for Easy Water Refills
  • Rounded Interiors for Easier Cleaning (Tray and Planter)

Size

This is a small-sized houseplant (10 cm diameter) designed for smaller houseplants. For this size, I'd recommend smaller plants like:

  • Seedlings
  • Cuttings/Propagations
  • Small Carnivorous Plants

If you're looking for a larger, medium-sized planter (15 cm diameter) for mid-sized houseplants, you can find my latest design here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/950840#profileId-918730

Assembly

  1. Print both plates (I have them separated by color, but you may choose to re-arrange)
  2. Gently screw the legs into the bottom of the planter (do not overtighten)
  3. Rest the water clip-on tray on the water reservoir tray’s cutout
  4. Place the plant pot onto the water tray
  5. Add your potting mix / soil to the pot and fill the legs with soil
  6. Add your plant(s) and enjoy!

My Print

I printed my planter out of Bambu Lab’s Matte PLA in:

  • Matte Dark Green
  • Matte Latte Brown

Here's a photo of some of my pothos cuttings in the smooth version of my planter.

Conclusion

I’m still a new 3D printing hobbyist, but I like to think that I’m an aspiring designer by night (outside of my day job). So, I would love to see you bring this design to life through your own prints and photos! And, if you really love the print, you can boost me to keep my design dreams alive! Cheers!

Thank you for the rating and showing off your plant and print! The color combo matches the plant; I love it! I'll take your feedback in for the next iteration I'm designing for the water intake.

@Paulsen I just published a medium-sized planter design that builds the watering piece directly into the watering tray and makes it bigger. I think this improves the watering design and should make that task much easier. :) https://makerworld.com/en/models/950840#profileId-918730

I really like your design! Last week I needed a slightly larger version so I made 140% upscale and I think I worked out nicely :) I was super exited when I just saw that you made a updated version, that has just the size that I was looking to print next. The attached water intake looks pretty nice but I think the legs are quite small as I am using mineral substrate.... So now I´m just contamplating if I should just print your new medium size desgin and hope it will work, or if I should learn how to resize the thread and make the legs bigger :D

This looks amazing! Thanks for sharing your photo, and I'm glad you were able to scale it up for the size you need! I was debating whether to make the legs larger for medium print, but I decided to keep them the same size and just add more of them, but let me know if you think there's a good design reason otherwise! I haven't tried it myself, but I wonder if cutting some string and dangling it into the legs could act as the wicking mechanism for your mineral substrate!

Yes! I'm working on some Christmas gifts for family, but my plan is to make a 15cm diameter planter next which should be good for medium sized plants. :)

@M2.Gold Hi again! It took me a little time with the holidays, but I just published a larger version with a 15 cm diameter! I think you'll find the pot is significantly larger than this one (by volume)! I improved some aspects of the design (like the water intake) and added additional plant legs and larger drainage holes. Should be much better than a resized version since I built this one at the STL file level. :) I hope you're able to enjoy! https://makerworld.com/en/models/950840#profileId-918730

Hi, I'll love see some bigger pots like that if you can. 180mm/210mm pots with bigger reservoir Thanks a lot!

Couldn't you just scale them up in your slicer?

Hi! Thanks for the feedback! I do have plans once I get a bit of time to design on my hands to make some larger sized pots with appropriate scaling of the various parts! Like @patch_cable said, you could scale in the slicer as a quick solution, but I'll find some time to design some larger pots with what I think are appropriately sized parts :)

@nabutbul I made a bigger pot! This one is a medium-sized planter with a 150mm diameter. It's got a significantly larger volume than this size, and I think you'll find you can house some much bigger plants. I'm still in the process of designing a large planter, but this one may accommodate some more of your plants! https://makerworld.com/en/models/950840#profileId-918730
