Constellations in the sky do not all occupy the same area: some are larger, some are more compact, and they are composed of stars that may appear close together or far apart. For this reason, the constellations in this set have different sizes. An attempt has been made, as far as possible, to maintain consistent proportions for all constellations, minimizing the distortions inevitable in transferring them to a two-dimensional plane.
As a reference, the aquarium constellation (in the center of the image with all constellations or in the lower left corner of the image with only the zoodiac constellations) has dimensions of approximately 11 cm x 9 cm (4,33 x 3,54331 inches). The thickness is 2.5 mm (0,984 inches) for all constellations ensuring sufficient strength and bending resistance for connexions between stars .
The constellations can be enlarged through the settings of your 3D slicer to obtain larger or smaller sizes or different scales.
It is recommended to print a light base of white filament first and only print the last layers with the glow in the dark filament. Depending on the chosen layer, it is possible to print with the glow in the dark filament only the stars or also the connections and designs of the constellations. We recommend placing them on a dark surface to create contrast with the printed pieces.
The pieces shown in the photos were printed with 4 layers with white PLA as reflective base and the following up to layer 17 with transparent PLA glow in the dark. Layer height of 0,2 mm.
Below an example of a side view of constellations. You can see the stars in relief from the parts connecting the stars of the constellations. The first layers were printed with white filament while the upper layers were printed with filament that glows in the dark. The stars look more conspicuous in the dark than the connections given larger layers of glowing filament forming them.
The first white layers reflect the light from the glow filament in front, conceal the background to which they are glued and give the pieces sturdiness without using too much glow-in-the-dark filament.
NOTE: It can be a good alternative to print the first layers white and only the stars yellow.
These constellations can be used as a reference for recognizing constellations in the sky, exploring the mythology behind these constellations and their figures, and knowing the names of their constituent stars to learn how to orient yourself in the starry sky.
The constellations that make up the set can also be used to decorate the classroom, create amulets and necklaces, or decorate your bedroom. Since the set contains all the constellations of the zodiac, it can be used to create astrology-themed installations or decorations.
This 3d model is great to combine with this other model of mine with glow-in-the-dark stars:
Glow in the dark stars set with different shape and size here on MakerWorld: https://makerworld.com/en/models/732076#profileId-663686
The designs and connections of the stars in the constellations are not standard and may vary from star chart to star chart.
⚠️NOTES: Prolonged use of the glow-in-the-dark filament may erode the extruder due to its abrasiveness. Inform yourself and equip yourself with the right equipment, extruder etc. suitable for the filament.
