Beginner's Guide

The Next Dimension

How It's Made

Update: I published a newer version called The Swatch-a-Macallit.

Modern aesthetic filaments + shiny build plates can produce some amazing effects for bottom surface patterns. I couldn't find a test model here which simultaneously included both top and bottom patterns, so I created this one.

Note: This model is intended to be printed with Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy. It's possible that it works in some other slicers, but it depends upon various parts being properly configured to use particular surface patterns.

The print profile contains 3 plates:

  1. Distinct patterns: Combines Rectilinear, Monotonic, and Monotonic Linear into a single pattern, since in a simple test model like this there won't be any difference. Aligned Rectilinear remains as a separate pattern because it could look subtly different.
  2. All patterns: Doesn't combine the aforementioned patterns. Included for completeness.
  3. With name: Includes a text element you can customize to include the filament and/or plate name, in case you want to maintain a collection of these test models to later reference.

Main filaments used in the video above:
- Comgrow Tri-color Silk PLA - red/blue/green
- Bambu Galaxy PLA - purple

Build plates used in the video above:

The "light beam" and "starry" holographic build plates. While such plates are often described as "holographic," the term "prismatic" is more accurate. These plates are sold on AliExpress, Amazon (double the price but quicker shipping), and Bambu also sells sticker sheets (but not pre-assembled plates). I've enjoyed all of the patterns in which these plates are offered except for the alphabetic/numeric ones, since those symbols show up backwards.

Note that some people have problems getting things to stick on these plates, but I haven't had any issues when setting the first layer temperature to 68 and all other layers to 60.
