Description

CNC Pen Plotter Add-On

I designed this model for use with my brother's Laguna Swift 4x4 CNC machine. His gantry has a 7.5 inch clearance, which is higher than most hobby style CNC machines. I also have a version of this specific to the X-Carve that mounts to the side (I use this one, and will provide a link here when I post the model).

The screw-on cap has a spot to clip in a 10x20mm spring. Alternately you can use a standard earplug to provide the spring (less effective). I sourced the springs from Home Depot. There are four (4) of the correct size in this pack. My Home Depot sells it for $5.38 USD.

How to Use

  1. First clip the spring to the cap. There are little nubs inside the cap to grip the spring in place.
  2. Next insert a pen into one of the carriers you printed. You may need to push hard to insert it all the way!
  3. Drop the Carrier with the pen into the Holder. It should slide in relatively easily. You may need to twist it a bit to get a loose fit when fully inserted.
  4. Screw the cap on with the spring inserted. You can also try using an Ear Plug or two to get the spring affect for pen pressure.
  5. Chuck the pen adapter into your spindle. Be sure to turn OFF the motor spin!
  6. Upload your G-Code to your CNC and be amazed!

There are plenty of YouTube videos on using your CNC as a pen plotter. Most are centered around using V-Carve (which is probably the best way to get images and text to your CNC). Fusion 360 works too, but doesn't have all the options V-Carve does.
