Description

This is an insert for the Flame & Fang board game. It is designed to make it easy to start playing by just pulling out boxes that have all the decks sorted and putting them on the table.

Some features:

  • Supports sleeved card (except for the story deck).
  • Supports multi-colored prints with a single AMS.
  • Most deck holders have a slot for discarded cards.
  • Logos for the game are printed into each of the holders (with permission from the publisher).
  • Everything fits into the box with no lid lift.

NOTES:
There just wasn’t room to make an insert for the story cards that supported sleeving those cards. Since those cards are not shuffled, I didn’t consider this an issue. I thought it was more important to have the “book” layout to support turning over each card.

One of the challenges of getting this game to the table is that there are lots of decks that need to be separated to start the game, but most of those cards all have the same back since they can be part of your hand. So, I wanted to have a holder for each type on the table that can easily be placed on the table. The meant a lot of boxes. Also, since each box needs to be distinguished, I added the deck title to all boxes that hold cards with the dragon backs.

Each player tray holds the starting deck (with a discard slot) and a side tray for the dragon playing piece. There is also a small card holder above that where you can place starting cards that have been replaced by a Trait card. Finally, there is a slot for the aspect token.

Everything fits in the box, but I did not create spacer inserts to make sure everything fits snugly with no movement. I generally don’t find that to be an issue, but if someone is finding it to be a problem, please contact me and I can design some extra parts.

When I started this, I wanted the card back logos to be embedded in the card holders. I contacted Peter and Michael and they gave be permission to scan the items and use that. I did it first for the Minion deck and I was SO impressed with the result. It looked fantastic. The Dragon logo from the back of the cards and the Flame & Fang logo turned out to be just as easy and the results really looked good. So, I thought, I should do that for the tokens, too. That turned out to be MUCH more work. The tokens don’t have as much contrast with the background, and it turned into a lot of manual work to produce a vector drawing that matched. In some cases, I just had to re-build the designs myself (and I am not a graphic designer). Since I wanted the colors to match, it also meant I had to consider how many colors I would print at one time (4 with a single Bambu AMS). That means I had to group the red tokens into one holder and the purple and yellow tokens in another holder. I would have normally grouped all of the resources tokens into one holder, but they are split with the meat resources in one holder and the coin and dragon stone resources in another due to color restrictions.

If you don’t have an AMS or some other system to print multi-color, you can just select a single color for the entire insert and the result should be a smooth print with no signs of the logo.
