Printing

Print the coasters face down on the plate

I have included print profiles to print a full set of coasters for all houses and for each house

To print all coasters on a single plate you will need 8 colors and 2 AMS's

The coasters provide an optional space on the bottom to add a piece of 90x2mm cork or TPU ring to give the coasters a more premium feel.

The TPU rings are included in the print profiles.

For best finish on the rings set Top Surface Pattern to Archimedean Chords and use a smooth build plate. This gives you a smooth surface to attach to the coaster and a nice looking shiny surface for the bottom of the coaster.

If you purchase cork rings be aware that they sometimes vary so you may need to resize the coaster by 1 or 2%. Try printing a test before printing the full coaster if you go that route.

You can print the coaster holder in any material, but for an extra premium look I recommend using a wood PLA and doing extra post-processing. I explain the steps I use to create mine in the next section.

Wood PLA Post-Processing

If you really want to impress people hand them something you 3D printed that looks, feels, and smells like real wood. I've done many tests to try to find a process that works for me and I've finally landed on something that looks and feels great without taking too much extra effort.

  1. Grab and 80-Grit sand paper and start sanding back and forth in a single direction. The goal here is to both smooth the surface and remove layers lines, but also this will also create the initial impression of a “wood grain”.
  2. Once you've gone over the surface with an 80-grit, switch to 320-grit and sand until you get a smooth surface. Once again you want to make sure to sand with the “grain” you created with the 80-grit to enhance it.
  3. Clean off all dust, may help to rinse under water, but make sure to dry well if you do.
  4. Once dry, you'll want to grab a brush-on wood stain and brush the stain onto your model following the grain. Be sure to follow the directions on the wood stain you use. I used Minwax Semi-Transparent Ebony penetrating stain.
  5. After one of stain you can reapply if you need to go darker with it, if not continue to the next step.
  6. Now is the time to apply a polyurethane finish. Grab your brush and apply a light coat keeping with the grain. Follow the directions of your stain, I used Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane so the following instructions apply to that
  7. Let the model dry for about 4 hours, then lightly sand with a 220-grit with the grain to ensure a smooth sure
  8. Apply a second coat of polyurethane and let dry for a full 24 hours.
  9. If you notice issues with your finish you can always sand again and reapply another coat.
