Description

This is v4 of the original Fidget Puck

Requires one 608 (608z/zz) ball bearing

Update 2024-06-24: I'm currently working on a much improved v5, stay tuned!

“What? You jumped from v1 straight to v4?”

Well, v2 and v3 were so embarrasing, they shall forever be buried in the depths of my SSD

v1 can be found here

This project started as a small 35 mm turntable. While it serves that purpose, I found myself constantly playing with it in my pocket.

While the model is deceptively simple, I've put a lot of thought into it, making sure

  • it feels good in the hand (rounded edge design)
  • it has the right size to be easily pocketable
  • it is super SMOOTH (using a bearing and the right clearances so the plastic doesn't touch/scrape)
  • it has a grippy edge for added haptics
  • it doesn't collect lint in your pocket (shroud added)

Use for:

  • manually rotating small things, maybe for airbrushing or for photography (turntable mode)
  • playing with it in your pocket (fidget mode)

Let me know if you find any other cool uses

Updates in v4:

  • Top and bottom edges now rounded, much nicer feel
  • Seam is now symmetrically in the middle, oddly satisfying
  • Seam has better clearance (anti-plastic-scraping measure)
  • Added shrowd to hide the inside (and prevent things to get in there)
  • Optimized the design to avoid plastic scraping during fidgeting, the motto is SMOOTH
  • Bottom bearing holder modified: shortened the rim, added a slit to make it easier to insert and remove the bearing
  • Top shell peg diameter slightly increased for better bearing fit

The supplied project file prints at 0.12mm layer height for good detail and smooth outside. I like to printe this on the textured PEI plate for better grip and nicer haptics.

Tolerances / bearing fit:

As long as you print with my tested parameters, tolerances should allow for a good press fit that still can be manually pulled apart when needed. My test setup:

  • Printer: A1 mini
  • Filament: Bambu PLA Basic
  • Layer height: 0.12 mm
  • Nozzle diameter: 0.4 mm

Production and assembly:

  • Print the 2 shells
  • Add a 608 (608z/608zz)  bearing (they are dirt cheap)
  • Press the halves together

Hint: if you print this model in black on a textured plate and print (or paint) the inner shroud white, it turns into a fidget Oreo 😊

Does well but the center spool is a weak point and breaks when dropped.
