Description

resonanceIntroduction

Unlock the full potential of your voice with my phonation tubes! Whether you're a singer, public speaker, or someone looking to improve vocal health, these customizable phonation tubes offer a unique and effective solution. Experience the benefits of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVT) and take your vocal training to the next level.

Description

Phonation tubes are essential tools for voice training and therapy, designed to create back pressure that helps improve vocal fold vibration and resonance. These tubes are fully customizable, allowing you to select specific inner diameters and lengths tailored to your vocal needs. With a focus on ease of use and printability, these tubes are ideal for singers, speech therapists, and anyone interested in enhancing their vocal performance.

Inspired by the Finnish resonance tube method developed in the 1960s by Professor Sovijärvi, these phonation tubes offer a simple yet effective approach to treating various voice disorders. The method has been internationally adopted in voice clinics since 2006, addressing both functional and organic voice disorders, such as vocal hyperfunction, hypofunction, muscle tension disorder, ventricular voice, chronic laryngitis, and vocal nodules.

User Guide

Selecting Your Tube Type

  • Choose from predefined options such as Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Phonastenia, Vocal Nodules, Vocal Fold Paresis, or Custom.
  • Custom Parameters (if Custom is selected):
    • Inner Diameter: Enter your desired inner diameter (e.g., 9 mm).
    • Tube Length: Enter your desired tube length (e.g., 270 mm).

Tolerance Test

  • Enable the "Tolerance Test" option to generate a 40mm tube with 20mm sections for test fitting. This helps you find the optimal fit for the connectors based on your filament and printer settings.

Tolerance Adjustment

  • Adjust the tolerance for the connectors using the "Tolerance Adjustment" option, which ranges from -0.5 to +0.5 mm. This fine-tunes the fit of the connector parts.

Wall Thickness

  • The wall thickness is adjustable and can be set between 1.2 mm and 3.2 mm. The default is 2.2 mm to ensure durability and printability.

Printing Instructions

  • Ensure the sections are printed with the female connector facing the build plate.
  • Use outer brim if you struggle with bed adhesion.

Assembly

  • Once printed, align and connect the sections using the male and female connectors.
  • Ensure the inner surfaces are smooth for uninterrupted airflow.

Using the Phonation Tube

  • Place one end of the tube in your mouth and vocalize through the tube.
  • Experiment with different pitches and volumes to experience the full benefits of SOVT exercises.
  • Use regularly to improve vocal quality, reduce strain, and enhance resonance.
  • Finnish Resonance Tube Method: Place one end of the tube between your lips and the other end 2 centimeters below the water surface. Use an audible voice with a comfortable pitch within your vocal range. Perform the exercise several times a day for effectiveness.

Travel and Assembly Tips

  • For Travel: Consider using a looser fit for the connectors and applying joint grease, commonly used for wind instruments, to make the joints air-tight while still allowing for easy disassembly.
  • Permanent Assembly: For a more permanent setup where the tube will not be disassembled, you can glue the pieces together. Use a strong adhesive suitable for the filament material of your 3D print (e.g., cyanoacrylate glue for PLA).

Important Notes

I'm not an expert, and while I believe the measurements are accurate, they may not be perfect. The chamfers are included to improve printability and should not significantly impact the effectiveness of the tubes, but this is based on my best understanding. If you are an expert or have more experience, please use the custom option to adjust the dimensions to your specific needs and share your feedback.

Determining the Right Tube Size

When using the phonation tube, you should feel a comfortable back pressure that supports your vocal folds without causing strain. If you feel too much resistance or too little, you might need to try a different inner diameter. The right tube size should help you feel an easy and resonant phonation, allowing you to vocalize without discomfort.

I hope this project helps you in your journey to better vocal health and performance. Please comment and share your knowledge to help improve the model and make it even more effective for the community. Happy printing and even happier vocalizing!

I've got a question regarding this print. is there a specific reason why you printed it in ABS? - would other materials work as well? I'm thinking of printing this since my wife has gotten into singing and has been telling me about these phonation techniques, but as I don't have ABS on hand I just figured I'd ask before I started to experiment. 🫣

Hi! PLA or PETG should work fine, but be gentle with hot water when cleaning them! I'm excited to hear what your wife thinks of them!

Replying to @_aron_ :
thanks for the reply. You didn't write it, but the printing profile automatically sets ABS up. Since that's the profiles base, I just didn't want to fuck up. 😉 thanks a heap!
