Description

The Design

NOTE: Version 2 is now live, it fixes the issues that users have been experiencing below:

It can be found here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/497301#profileId-411727

This is an almost impossible passthrough illusion.

The Larger Barrel shaped object passes through the smaller hour glass object.

There may initially be some friction, so carefully pass the pieces through each other to loosen the fit.

This is a fun piece and can be used as a fidget toy as well

Dimensions are approximately: diameter 46mm x 50mm

Let me know if you experience any issues.

If you enjoy this print consider giving it a boost (It'd really help me out!)

Printing

Standard settings should work fine to slice. 0.2 layer height, i advise not going below 0.16mm layer height as the print started failing at this point.

My Work

After many years in Engineering, I've just decided to try and follow my childhood dream of becoming of a Creative Designer.

A Creative Designer of what? No idea! Right now I really like puzzles, mechanisms and kinetic sculptures so that's where I'm going to focus my efforts.

Boosts really help me out

To support me even more (not ever required), for information around development of my models (background to come) and for commercial use, i've started a patreon here:

100% and 150% works perfectly. but I did have to add tree supports or it would fail as seen in the second pic.

I really like the models. just looks awesome and is super fun to play with. 5 stars unfortunately the print profile is not perfect. printed the “hollow” part 2 times. the first time was oookay. the overhangs were not that good but the toy worked. wanted to print it a second time to get a better result and the whole model failed and stringed at the top overhangs of the spiral (like some pictures from other people show) Timelapse showed the nozzle is dragging the thin parts with it :/

Hey, i appreciate that. i have spent many hours either having rough overhangs, or the edges curling up and failing the print. Supports helps with nozzle drag and prevent it failing, but don't improve the finish to the point of being smooth. Nated3D's print profile is the best so far. Really its a cooling issue on the thin section, but those settings aren't available in the print profile. i didn't want the design to go to waste though. I'm working on similar designs with different profiles.

Thank you for the prompt response! The design is truly beautiful, so I appreciate you sharing it with us. I will try using the other print profile or adding some supports. Keep up the fantastic work! ;)

I try 2 times to print it and both time the nozzle head goes over the white part, hits it and make it detached from the plate and loose all the time and printing

Ah thats so fustrating, Sorry about that. Some of the profiles with supports have had more Success, and i may update mine now, seems quite a few people having the same issue. I only had this issue with lower layer height but seems i got lucky

tree supports. I failed twice before adding supports. oddly you have to change it on the object instead of global. probably because it’s prints one and then the other.

that’s exactly what’s happening to me. did you find a way around it? I put glue on the plate and I’m about to slow it down to 50% to see if it will do it.

I think you should print it like this - then it will pass through easily...

Is that a silk filament? I only got mine to print successfully after baking it dry for 8 hours

Yes it's silk triple color filament, freshly opened from sealed bag.

Try this version, it should sort the overhangs: https://makerworld.com/en/models/497301#profileId-411727

bigger one is 150%. works perfect! I had to use tree supports on both prints. would making it longer still work properly?

Scaling 1 part and not the other won't but scaling both parts might work. I'm looking at making a longer outside part
