Description

This model is an art stand for small artworks, intended for use in Free Little Art Galleries. It's parameterized to let you print it larger, to customize the text embossed on the back, adjust the tilt angle, or leave off the “rt” that makes it Art.

To make for easy printing and compact storage when not in use, the stand is two flat parts that snap securely together. The parts are shaped so as to make it impossible to assemble them incorrectly.

Parameters

  • display lets you choose between a view that shows the two parts in their “assembled” configuration, with the tilt you've specified, and having them oriented in the best configuration for printing. Of course, you should only export or download the STL file in the latter view. In either view, you may see floating text in the viewing area suggesting what you should do before exporting.
  • depth is the thickness of the two flat pieces. If you make the frame very large, increase the depth for attitional strength.
  • width at base refers to the side-to-side measurement at the bottom of the A shape.
  • width at top refers to the length of the flat area at the top of the A shape, which can go all the way down to zero.
  • The height of the A shape is determined by the sum of two parameters – back height being the part above the shelf, and leg height the part below the shelf.
  • The maximum leg width lets you make the long sides of the A narrower.
  • shelf depth is the distance the shelf protrudes from the stand.
  • stand angle is the number of degrees the stand tilts back from the vertical. This is controlled via the height of the “T” shaped shelf-and-leg part. The parts that touch the ground are also sheared off so they sit flat on the supporting surface.
  • shelf tilt lets you tilt the shelf upward a specified amount to hold the artwork in place a little more securely than the tilt of the stand itself.
  • tolerance setting is a property of your printer and material. If the parts are too hard to put together, increase this number – if they're too loose, decrease it.
  • label is text to be printed on the back of the A shape. It's intended for owners of tiny galleries that employ these stands to mark them as property of the gallery, in case the curator doesn't want visitors taking them also when they take home the art they are used to display. You can leave this blank, but in that case the code wants you to explicitly clear the default value from the field. You must enter something here – even if it's nothing.
  • letter height controls the size of the characters in the label.
  • make it say art is a checkbox option that controls whether the letters “rt” are cut into the frame. By default they are.
  • Hollow lets you select whether to hollow out the back/undersides of the parts, as in the above illustrations, or make both parts solid slabs.

Printing Guidance

This is designed for easy printing and economy. The hollowed-out structure makes it strong while conserving material. The default printing orientation has the hollowed-out side facing up. You shouldn't need supports or brims.
