After not finding a great spool roller that would fit a variety of spool sizes, I decided to come up with my own. After a few ideas, I came up with this one! It adjusts from tiny spools as small as 100mm in diameter up to 300mm!
The typical 1kg spools are around 200mm in diameter, but this also works with PolyMaker 3kg (250mm diameter) rolls, even their 5kg (300mm diameter) rolls. With slots for 100mm to 300mm (in 50mm increments), it ensures the roll stays at a good tangent angle to the wheels, preventing the spool from being pulled off. Printing 2 separate rollers allows for different spool widths, all while allowing for a small footprint when not in use.
I've successfully printed both cardboard and plastic spools without any issues. No supports are needed when printing, and the wheels slide on from both sides of the bearings, and use a little superglue to keep them together.
Other than the printed parts, you will need (per base, and you will want 2 bases for a spool):
I hope you enjoy this as much as I have! Enjoy printing!
