Description

DISCLAIMER:

  • Some 3DHOJOR spools have recently been reported to be slightly larger due to a wax-like coating around the edge. If your spool matches this description please scale the adapter model to 100.5% and leave a comment if this works for you. I don't have a matching spool to test so your feedback is important!

Description:

This model widens one side of the spool ring adapter to stabilize a 3DHOJOR 1kg 199x62mm cardboard spool while it rotates within a Bambu Lab AMS.

Features:

  • Reusable
  • 3DHOJOR nameplate for easy identification when reusing

Instructions:

  • Print one of each model for a single spool.
  • Affix the wide spool ring adapter on the right-hand side of the 3DHOJOR spool if you're facing the AMS.
  • See attached photos.

Considerations:

  • Print Material: Please print with a basic PLA or PETG to minimize any shrinkage.
  • Too Tight? Too Loose? Cardboard expands with humidity and contracts when dried. A cardboard spool that has absorbed too much moisture may cause the adapters to fit very tight. Placing the spool in a filament dryer, such as the SUNLU S2, for a bit should resolve this. Note, you should not dry the spool with the adapters attached as they can warp in the heat. Keep in mind that after a long drying session the adapters may fit too loose. This should resolve itself shortly as the cardboard reabsorbs some moisture from the air.
  • AMS Lid Doesn't Close? All of the spool adapters I make are less than the official AMS spool clearance limit of 202mm, as specified on the official AMS product page, and as tested within my own AMS. However, some people have stated their spools are rubbing against the lid with the adapters attached. It's hard to say what's causing this since I cannot reproduce the issue myself, however, I've created an AMS Lid Riser which allows you to keep your AMS lid closed while providing additional clearance for larger filament spools. It's a quick and easy print which you can find on my profile or directly here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/33133

I know other people said that it's a very tight fit, but I absolutely can't get the ring on the spool. I've never bought 3DHoJor before, but I notice that the edge of the cardboard spool is coated with some rubber or plastic, whereas my Overture spools (which are also nominally 199mm) aren't coated. I don't know if the coating is something that 3DHoJor has recently started doing to their spools, but perhaps that's why I can't get the rings to fit. Edit: I scaled X and Y to 100.5% and it fits perfectly.

Thank you for the feedback and sharing your experience! I've noticed some other brands doing this also. I think they're trying to make their cardboard spools more compatible with AMS-like systems out of the box. I've just added a note to the model description regarding this. Thanks again!

It fits but it was really really tight. I printed in petg and had to gingerly press it on [while holding my breath]. There was a coating to seal the edges of the cardboard spool by the factory. I don’t know if that contributed to the tightness and if the adapter design accounted for this coating at the time of creation. Once it’s on it works beautifully but I’m not sure I can get the adapter on or off another spool without sizing up a bit.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, it seems the coating is a new addition to their spool however I'm not sure how widespread this feature is yet. I have a note in the model description regarding this as another user has reported success scaling the model to 100.5%. I appreciate you taking the time to share you experience as this is very helpful information.
