If you like this model and find it useful, you can support me in creating more by clicking on the Boost button above.

NOTE: I have uploaded STEP files of all models. To access them  you just have to click on “Download or Print”, and then the REALLY badly labelled "Download STL" and it will show the raw model files, which are all STEP.

Since getting the Bambu Lab X1 with it's AMS system I have struggled with new cardboard spools that a lot of manufactures are moving towards.

I love the cardboard spools for their reduction in plastic waste, but they are specifically not recommended for use is the AMS system, and I have had a great deal of trouble adapting them to work.

I use predominately eSUN brand so these issues may be related to the size of the spools that they supply.

  • I have tried a simple printed ring to go over the edge of the cardboard ring, but this was very wobbly as the cardboard is still the main support, and the overall diameter increase, however small, caused binding issues in the ASM system.
  • I tried electrical tape on the edge of the roll to reduce the disintegration of the cardboard edge but the rim is very narrow and it caused issues with AMS rollers not gripping and causing errors
  • I tried rolling of the entire roll of filament onto a separate plastic roll, but this requires a dedicated rolling tool, another plastic roll that was not being used, and time!

In the end I created this design, as I was not happy with the designs that I saw online.

This allows you to remove the outer cardboard rings on the spools while leaving the center tube that holds the filament intact.

Since moving to these I no longer have any issues with my AMS whereas previously i would struggle with almost every print using cardboard spools.

They use very little filament to print and are a great way to use the little bits of filament left over at the end of a roll!

If you need any extra labels that I have not included , please let me know and I will upload them to this project.

Start with a regular cardboard spool

Rip off one side, no need to clean up the edges!

Screw together the centre and one outer ring, and while squeezing the blades, push in fully (You can loop the filament end through the spokes to secure)

Flip over and rip off the remaining outer cardboard side

Screw on the other outer ring and push in the label. Enjoy!

I was able to split the print between my P1s and A1 Mini, and both printed beautifully and without error. Parts fit into any cardboard spool I own. I used Kingroon White PETG (the cheap stuff from AliExpress) at 265 degrees, 70 degrees for build plate temp, and slowed the outer and inner walls by 50mm/sec while bumping printing speed to 124% on both machines. My hat off to you, sir!

This was excellent, also works on my non-cardboard spools that are too small in diameter for the AMS.

That is awesome, I had no idea that would work as well!

This is the best version I have come across so far. I have been using my empty Bambu spools in the same way but I always have more cardboard spools than bambu ones so this is a perfect solution. I printed mine with PLA. love it!

printed great and works well in the AMS. Center hub is a little too small for my Elegoo and Sovol, but it still fits the purpose. Great job on the design.
