Description

This is my take on the cup holder trash bin for cars.

 

I designed it specifically for my Mini Cooper SE, with a mini logo of course, but given it's such a small car, i would imagine it should fit most other car's cup holders. I have also included a lid with a Bambu logo (shown as the cover picture), and a plain lid with no logo if you want to add your own.

 

I took inspiration from an amazon listing that I liked (I'm sure you can find the same design on AliExpress, Temu etc. and it's likely from the exact same manufacturer lol).

 

however, in order to achieve the tilted top, and keep the lid self closing, i would have to incorporate a spring mechanism of some sort, which seemed overly complicated, so I ended up with a flat design, but still able to make the lid self closing, and here's how.

 

I basically used Bambu's studio's “cut” function, and created three pieces of the lid. the while portion is necessary to retain the integrity of the top (showing) surface, otherwise, you'll see a line in the middle. then the green / black pieces are separated so I can use different infill %, resulting one side of the lid being heavier than the other, ultimately achieving the self closing mechanism.

 

if you intend to use the plain lid and add your own logo, make sure you follow these steps to achieve the self-closing effect (or please share if you have a better way to achieve different % of infill on the same model)

 

  1. remember the X Y Z position of your model. this is important because every time Bambu Studio cuts your model, it likes to move them apart, but for this exercise, you need to bring them back together.
  2. cut 0.4mm from the build surface, and bring them back together. I used 0.4mm because my logo design is 0.4mm deep. choose whatever depth you engraved your logo, and that should solve the showing surface.
  3. cut the remaining piece in the middle through the pivoting axis. I moved the cutting surface to 1mm to one side to make sure the pivoting axles are 100% infill. again remember to bring them back together
  4. for some reason, you need to assemble all the cut pieced, and move the green/black pieces 0.4mm above build plate. if you don't assembly them, they will remain “stuck” on build plate.
  5. once you've done all the cut and positioning, you can set green piece to 100% infill, and the black piece to 15% or whatever low % you want, doesn't really matter. the white part is just two layers, so doesn't matter the infill. then you should be able to achieve the self closing effect.

Printed in ASA successfully on 0.12mm High Quality with 100% rectilinear infill, 4 walls and ironing so the bottom looks nice. Came out great, and accidentally ended up with a subtle interesting external pattern which looks like a carbon fiber weave. Pretty cool! I'm shocked the bottom printed with no support. Only needed to clean up the lid posts a little with a knife.
