Description

I designed this as a useful standard 3D Printer test model. Test printer settings, various filaments, support settings etc. Forget Benchy models that only go in the bin. These can be used in around your home even if they don’t turn out perfectly. It prints in place, thus testing the hinges and articulation after removal from the print bed. It proved interesting to see the variable results from the same brand of filament but in different colours. I tested pretty well all of my PLA filaments, Bambu, Sunlu, Anycubic, Tinmorry, Monoprice, Amazon etc, to understand their pros and cons with sizing, strength of layer bonding, ease of support removal, etc.

Support was a little tricky to remove, but printed nicely. Thanks.

Thank you for your kind comments. I printed at least one of these with every make and colour of PLA I have, it’s interesting to see how different the difficulty of removing supports is, even with the same make but a different colour. As well as how smooth the hinges are to rotate after the supports are removed.

These are some of my favorite useful items to print and use. I have these in many colors! Printed in PETG and ASA using the designer's profile on an X1C. The ASA supports came out flawlessly which is rare for that plastic.

I really love the design. Do you have other sizes available? I know it's hard to scale down print-in-place designs and I'd love some that were about 50-70% of this size.

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes I have a larger one and a small version, I will upload them this weekend. The pivots and bodies are the same just different lengths. I found that the longest one I designed can be too weak to clamp some packaging together, but I have found uses for them around the house. The short one also helps to squeeze the last remains of toothpaste from the tube.

Replying to @stuartwyre :
Looking forward to seeing them! I’m going to print a set of each in several colors to keep on hand. My kids don’t close bags without these clamps.

nice print and a good idea to test a printer with something useful. I came across some problems when removing the supports, one possible solution could be to make it a throughhole instead of just a bowl where filament gets pushed to the back and does not come out easily.

Thank you. I really tried to design it so no supports are necessary. But it’s a compromise to get the catch strong enough to do the job. I printed at least one of these with every make and colour of PLA I have, it’s interesting to see how different the difficulty of removing supports is, even with the same make but a different colour. As well as how smooth the hinges are to rotate after the supports are removed.

Cool mechanism. Is there any chance of getting a smaller Version?

What is the difference between the 2 print profiles you have uploaded? Thanks.

The difference between the two I have uploaded is only the overall length. The ends (hinges) are identical.
