This is my take on a modern Chessboard. 
I took inspiration of the 2D Design of the Chess.com board. 

The whole model is print in place except for the individual chess pieces. The board has a hinge so you can bring it with you when travelling. 

You can play around with the Infill settings and modifyers to give the board your own individual look. The tolerance is 0.1mm make sure ur printer can handle that before printing. I printed mine with 0.15mm layer height and I placed a modifyer for Infill and layers from 2.15mm to 2.8mm with zero upper walls and a color change at 3.65mm. 

You can do the same for the individual Chess Pieces. For example a modifyer from 0-1.4mm without bottom and top layers will result in a Infill Base with a solid chess piece :)
