Magic Spinner – The floating precision top
Description
The Magic Spinner is a minimalist, precision top with a ring design: A slender, aerodynamically shaped outer ring is connected to a central hub via three delicate spokes. From there, a long, tapered handle extends, which is used to spin the top, while a fine tip at the bottom serves as the pivot point.
Due to the mass distribution in the outer ring – far from the axis of rotation – the spinner acts like a small flywheel: Once set in motion, it continues to spin surprisingly long and smoothly, almost floating, thanks to its high moment of inertia. The minimalist, open spoke design also makes it visually light – a fascinating interplay of physics and design, perfect as a desk fidget, gift, or decorative object.
The model was fully parametrically and manifold modeled and is print-ready without post-processing.
Unfortunately, the product must be printed with supports, but it is a single part. I am working on making it possible without supports.
