I work as a security officer for a large city school district, and I was invited to a chess day at one of the district’s more troubled elementary schools. While there, the children participated in playing chess and seemed genuinely interested in it. Being in security, I have found that the more positive interaction you have with individuals, the more likely any interaction will be more positive in the future. I really enjoyed playing chess with the kids, and they got to ask questions about me and my job and family and such too. We connected as people, not as a mean security guy and an unruly kid.
After the chess day, I started to design a gift or trinket for the kids that participated in the next chess day. It is obvious that I would make a chess set, but none of the other designs I printed were what I was looking for. Some were too small, some too large, some too intricate, and some too weak for a youngster’s backpack.
I had to make it relatively small, customizable colors (so the kids could pick their favorite colors for their pieces), and securable in a backpack.
This is the design I landed on!
The kids did have another chess day during summer school but unfortunately I was not able to attend due to other parts of my job taking priority. So far, I have printed out a few sets, and they have all turned out functional, and fun! I plan to print off many of these to pass out during the next chess day we have, probably in the 26-27 school year!
If you want to design your own pieces or have a set of pieces you like more than my generic designs, great! Each square is 15mm, and the tallest the pieces can be to fit in the box is 18mm. So to leave some printer tolerance and allow the pieces to fit in the squares easily, I would suggest making each piece no larger than 14mm (Length) x 14mm (width) x 18mm (height).
Happy chess everyone!
