"Dorothy" refers to two iconic designs in the storm-chasing world. In the famous 1996 movie Twister, it was the name of the barrel-shaped data probes deployed in a tornado's path. In real life, however, "Dorothy" is a powerful, armored chase vehicle built by the Iowa Storm Chasing Network (ISCN).

The "Dorothy" Vehicle in a Nutshell:

  • Construction: Built on a heavy-duty Ford E-350 van chassis. It features a dual-layer steel body coated with bulletproof Line-X protective spray and reinforced armored windows.
  • Stabilization: During intercept operations, hydraulic flaps drop down to seal the gap between the vehicle and the ground. This prevents high winds from getting underneath and flipping the van.
  • Purpose: Unlike massive tornado intercept vehicles like the TIV, "Dorothy" was not designed to drive directly inside a tornado core. Instead, it is built to safely navigate the edges of severe storms to capture high-definition, slow-motion footage and precise meteorological data.
