Modular Chess – 3D-printable Chess Set with Transformation Mechanism

A chess variant where pieces can transform mid-game.

What is Modular Chess?

Modular Chess is a chess variant that expands the classic game with a single new rule: transformation. Physical module tiles are transferred between your own pieces – a Knight and a Bishop merge into a Rook, a Queen splits into two Rooks. What's special about this set: Every piece (except the King) consists of a base pawn and up to four module tiles (Knight and Bishop modules). Each transformation is performed physically directly on the board – you simply rearrange the tiles.

How does it work?

PieceComposition
PawnBase Pawn (no modules)
KnightBase Pawn + 1 Knight Module
BishopBase Pawn + 1 Bishop Module
RookBase Pawn + 2 Modules (inserted inverted)
QueenBase Pawn + 4 Modules (as "stilts" on the bottom)
KingClassic piece (not modular)

The silhouettes of the tiles make each piece instantly recognizable – Knight's head, Bishop's miter, or Rook's battlements on the back.

What is included in the print?

  • 30 Base Pawns (15 per color)
  • 12 Knight Modules (6 per color)
  • 12 Bishop Modules (6 per color)
  • 2 Kings (classic design)

Not included: Chessboard (standard 8×8, square size 4–6 cm recommended)

About the Project

Modular Chess was developed to add a new tactical dimension to classic chess – without changing the basic rules. All normal chess rules remain. You can play a completely normal game. But you don't have to. ;)
