Description

Simple magnetic latch for a baby gate or similar door/gate where you want a clean, low-profile hold without bulky hardware. This design uses small disc magnets inserted during the print and mounts with VHB tape.

Assembly / hardware notes

  • Add a pause at layer 22 to insert the magnets.
  • This model was designed for 0.3" x 0.11" neodymium disc magnets from home depot: Master Magnet rare earth discs
  • You can use 2 magnets in each half for a lighter hold if you do not want the latch to be too strong.
  • Attached using VHB tape from Amazon: 3M VHB tape

Important magnet note

  • Before inserting the magnets, mark one face of each magnet and keep the orientation consistent so the two latch halves attract correctly instead of repel.

Material options

  • PLA works well for general use.
  • PETG is a good option if you want a little more durability.
  • TPU for AMS can also be used if you want a quieter close when the two sides come together. This was my preferred choice.

Printing notes

  • Pause at layer 22 (profile should already be set with this)
  • Insert magnets carefully and make sure they are seated flat before resuming
  • Confirm polarity before continuing the print
