🐉 Ancient Drake Hairpin & Cloak Fastener
Add a touch of high-fantasy elegance to your aesthetic with the Ancient Drake Hairpin. This model is designed to be a functional piece of wearable art, blending the fierce, detailed silhouette of a dragon with the practical utility of a hair accessory or garment fastener. Whether you are heading to a Ren Faire, a midline LARP, or just want to bring some Draconic flair to your daily outfit, this print is for you.
🔍 Detailed Description
This model features a highly detailed, textured dragon sculpt with a wrap-around wing design. The dragon’s body is anatomically curved to sit flush against a bun, a thick gathering of hair, or even a folded scarf.
The wings feature integrated pass-through points (visible in the technical renders) that allow a hair stick or pin to slide through, locking the dragon firmly in place. The scale detail is optimized for 0.4mm nozzles but truly shines with a 0.2mm nozzle or resin printing to capture every ridge and spinal plate.
🛠️ Functional Use & Assembly
To use this as a hairpin or cloak clasp:
- Position: Place the dragon body over your gathered hair, scarf, or cloak fabric.
- Assembly: Take a standard hair stick (or a 3D-printed dowel) and slide it through the circular opening in the first wing.
- Secure: Pass the pin underneath the material and out through the opening in the opposite wing.
- Result: The "clamping" action of the pin against the curved body of the dragon ensures it stays secure without needing adhesives or complex clips.
IMPORTANT ASSEMBLY NOTE: To ensure the best print orientation and maximum detail, this model prints in two main pieces. You will find two triangular alignment pins included in the file.
- Adhesive: I highly recommend using a STRONG two-part epoxy for assembly.
- Method: Apply the epoxy to both the flat mounting surfaces of the body and inside the triangular pin slots. Insert the pins and clamp the pieces together until fully cured. This ensures the structural integrity needed to handle the tension of thick hair or heavy cloak fabric.
🖼️ Stand-Alone Decor: The "Edge-Hanger"
Beyond its use as jewelry, this model is designed with a specific center of gravity that allows it to function as a stand-alone decorative accent.
- Lamp Shades: Hook the dragon's claws or tail over the rim of a lamp shade to create a silhouette of a drake "perching" on your light source.
- Monitors & TVs: It can hang from the top edge of a computer monitor or TV frame, acting as a "Guardian of the Screen."
- Shelving: Use it to break up the flat lines of a bookshelf by having a dragon peeking over the edge of your favorite fantasy novels.
💡 History & Origins
The design draws inspiration from ancient Norse "Great Beast" motifs and gothic cathedral architecture. I wanted to create something that looked like it was forged in a dragon-fire smithy rather than just a modern plastic clip. The anatomy is a hybrid of a classic Western Dragon and a Wyvern, focusing on the "wrap-around" predatory stance.
