Description

This unique creation transforms simple flat strips of plastic into a mesmerizing three-dimensional orb through a satisfying folding process reminiscent of intricate origami techniques. The "Flex Orb" not only astonishes with its solidity and complex structure but also invites a tactile exploration with its varied textures, making it a compelling piece for both visual and sensory appreciation.

Born from a blend of traditional origami techniques and modern 3D printing technology, the Flex Orb is not just an object, but an experience. When I first designed the Flex Orb, I was fascinated by the transformation of simple flat strips of plastic into a solid, three-dimensional sphere. The completion of that last fold brings the magic to life, turning what was once flat into something full of depth and strength.

Unique Features & Customization: The Flex Orb stands out with its customizable visual designs, making each piece a unique work of art. The incorporation of various textures adds a tactile dimension that invites you to explore every curve and crevice with your fingertips. With an assortment of styles available, you're empowered to unleash your creativity. Choose your base color and enhance it with optional additional colors to make your Flex Orb truly yours. Whether you're using the AMS or manually pausing the print to change colors, the possibilities are endless.

Easy Printing & Assembly: Designed with the enthusiast in mind, the Flex Orb is straightforward to print, requiring only three flat strips that effortlessly come together to form a captivating orb approximately 8 cm in diameter. The assembly process is a hands-on experience that is both intuitive and rewarding. By looping and hooking each strip into a cylinder and then weaving them together, you create a structure that's both intricate and robust. Here is a video instruction to guide you through folding of the orbs to achieve the perfect form.

Optional Enhancements: Elevate your Flex Orb with optional snap-on eyelets for easy hanging, or utilize snap-on connectors to link multiple orbs together, expanding the potential for dynamic installations or personalized decorations.

Download the model today and unleash the potential of your 3D printer to bring this exceptional piece to life.

NOTE: The print times that MakerWorld displays are double the actual time because it includes both the AMS and non-AMS plates.

Update

March 5th, 2024 - Added the "Tessellation Hex" orb. I printed mine in yellow on a black background. It reminds me of a bee hive.

March 7th, 20024 - Added a small separate collection of “Wood” themed orbs.

March 8th, 2024 - Added the “Tiles” orb. I was going for an optical illusion but it turned out looking like bathroom tiles.

March 10th, 2024 - There's a new orb called “Fat Spirals”. It looks a little like a fiber string wrapped around the orb. I picked blue as my base color and red for the fibers but try some crazy colors and see how it turns out.

March 12th, 2024 - I've created a 12-sided die Flex Orb. After you assemble it, you can use it as a gaming die.

March 16th, 2024 - Added a Red, Green, Blue Moiré patterned orb on white. This is one of my favorites. It has a real nice physical texture to it.

March 22nd, 2024 - I've created a Magic Answer Orb. After you assemble it, you can ask it questions.

April 1st, 20024 - Added a “Spectrum” orb. It uses four colors (Black,Red,Green & Blue). The design roughly mixes those colors to create all the colors of the spectrum and you can probably see it if you stand 20 feet away from it and squint. Change the Black filament to white if you want to see the edges of the orb.

I've tried printing the solid colors profile several times but the half circle portions either split or break off during assembly. I'm using Bambu PLA Basic and I'm gentle with the parts during assembly. Any ideas what might be going wrong.

Sorry for the frustration. I've updated it so that it should print better for you. It'll print a little thinner but it shouldn't split so easy now.
