Description

Who doesn't know it, the cardboard spool is slowly running out, and the AMS (Automatic Material Supply) is increasingly having trouble using it correctly. Problems arise repeatedly. While the environmental idea of cardboard spools is certainly good, the low weight also brings problems.

There are several variants of spool weights with batteries. However, these can be damaged by constantly changing temperatures (e.g., if the AMS is above the printer) and constant movement and vibration, or they can leak on their own. I didn't want to take that risk. Therefore, I created my own version with screws and nuts.

Weight without Spool: ~233g

Weight with empty Cardboard Spool (e.g. Jayo): ~389,5g

Weigt of an empty Bambulab Spool: ~256g

Print Settings:

The best results can be achieved with a layer height of 0.20 or 0.16mm. The thread is optimized for 3D printing, but with too large layers, occasional stringing may occur. These may need to be cut afterward, but functionality should still be maintained.
For infill go with any pattern you like. With additional infill you can increase the weight if needed.

Attention: There are several models and combinations. (Coming soon)

Model 5075 - Universal Nut:

50mm inner diameter - 75mm outer diameter

Fits a wide range of spools.

Tested with: Sunlu Spools, Sunlu Refill Spools, eSun Spools, Jayo Cardboard Spools, Bambulab Spools

Model 6575 - Universal Body:

65mm height - 75mm outer diameter

Fits a wide range of spools.

Tested with: Sunlu Spools, Sunlu Refill Spools, eSun Spools, Jayo Cardboard Spools, Bambulab Spools

Model 5030 - Universal Lid:

Best screwed with a coin (e.g. 5 or 20 Euro cents). This way, you can easily unscrew the screws at any time.

Bill of Materials:

3x M10x30mm hex bolts (Amazon | AliExpress)

3x M10x30(x17)mm connecting nuts (Amazon | AliExpress)

Assembly:

  • Screw the screw into the connecting nut and insert it into the core of model 6575 - Universal Body. Ensure that the sides of the screw and the nut are aligned. Whether the screw head is up or down makes no difference.
  • Take the lid and screw it on. I used, for example, a 5 or 20 Eurocent coin. It's better to use a larger coin than a smaller one.
  • Now just screw the spool weight onto the spool. Depending on the spool type and its position in the AMS, make sure they don't interfere with each other. Try to center it. The Universal Adapter should fit all spools.
