Modular Hexagonal Wall Sign

This is the 3d print frame for the modular hexagonal wall sign. 

I used the following print settings:

• Supports → enabled
  • Tree (auto)
  • top z distance → 0.275

The wood inserts can be laser cut with the associated model and super glued into the frame. The biscuits have tight enough tolerances that they shouldn't need to be glued. They will hold with friction alone.

I included a file for a single hex with keyhole. Use this one if your sign is getting very large and you either need to relocate the main keyhole or need additional keyholes.

I also included the full parametric design. Feel free to change the parameters which include tile size, rail thickness, and base thickness.

Changing the rail thickness might be of particular interest as this is the thickness of the wood. I used 3.5mm thick craft walnut wood sheet (12x12) from Michaels. I found it in the Cricut aisle. This wood is particularly nice for laser cutting because it comes with a sticker sheet attached so that the laser doesn't singe or leave residue on the rest of the wood.

We used this project to display and remind our kids of our family values. But you can customize it with any text or images that you want. Could be a good gift for grandparents. Each grandkid can get his own hexagon.
