I needed to make some very small springs that are hard to find. It was too expensive to try and source these compression springs.

This tool will allow you to make very small compression springs.

I'm using a hand drill to run the screw. But you can use your hand, screwdriver, Allen key, etc.

It is designed for 3.8mm diameter spring using .009 Steel Music Wire.
You will need:
(2) M3x30mm Screw (Holds pressure plate)
(1) M3x50mm Screw (Main spring winding screw)
(4) M3x10x5mm Threaded inserts
(3) 22x22x3mm Aluminum plates with through holes drilled where shown
(Or you can just simply use the 3d printed pressure plates. They work just as good.)

This rig can be modified for anysize spring. Simply drill out the holes to be larger and insert larger nuts or threaded inserts. Use appropriate screw for type of spring you want!

This is a work in progress as I will be adding a hand crank version, a motorized version, and maybe a version that has different sizes built in.

Post-Printing

Assembly

  1. Print parts: WireWinder_Base, WireWinder_Clamps009, WireWinder_Plate
Insert Threaded inserts, 2 on the right and one in the center.Slide on WireWinder_Clamps009 and secure with (2) M3x30mm screws and (2) Washers.Create an angled notch at the end of the M3x50mm screw. See photoInsert the M3x50mm screw into center hole from the backside and screw until the notch appears on the front.Thread on M3 threaded insert.

Operation

  1. Loosen Clamp Plates just enough to pass wire through.
Lay end of wire into notch on screw.Tighten threaded insert/nut past notch and over wire clamping wire into place.Slowly turn M3x50mm screw clockwise(facing rear) counterclockwise(facing front) to start then continue turning once wire lays into threads nicely. When at desired length snip wire.Take off locking nut and unscrew main winding screw until spring loosens.Carefully slide spring off and trim bad ends.Profit!
