Description

ClipSpool - Hex

After recently switching to only buying filament refills from BL where possible, I decided to design a spool to meet my needs, and get rid of my box of filament clips.

This is designed to be compatible with the Bambu Lab's filament refills, including the little nub for preventing the cardboard inner from rotating freely, with a 55mm inner diameter, and 200mm outer diameter. The filament labels pop in and out, but still hold securely.

The two halves of the spool thread together and friction keeps them locked in place. I have printed more than 4kg of filament using the different versions of the ClipSpool, and had no issues whatsoever.

Updates:

  • Added the blank label in Step format to make it easy to edit in CAD (thanks to everyone for messaging and asking for this).
  • Added video on one way to easily edit the blank label in Bambu Studio (GIF was unwatchable, so added a YouTube link)
  • Following multiple requests, I've added an adapter for those who like to respool with filament from another spool. See attached 3mf file. First requested by Josh @ https://makerworld.com/en/u/297989628

Filament Clip

The filament clip channel run 360 degrees around both halves of the spool. The channel is slightly wider that the filament, but the shape of the channel keeps everything securely in place. No more cutting off the deformed end of the filament, and it pops in or out with very little effort.

The filament clip channel is identical on all versions of the ClipSpool. Video below shows how easy it is to lock the filament with one hand (video shows the Hex version - didn't make sense to make a new video for each version).

Filament Label

I've found that I wanted to be able to quickly pick out some filament without wondering if it's Basic or Matte… or even PETG.

You can of course put your name on the filament label instead, especially if you have a shared printer. I've included a blank label so that you can pop in to Bambu Studio and add your own text. I've also included a little label holder, so you have somewhere to store them. I print labels in bulk to avoid wasting too much filament with colour changes.

The labels also pop in and out with a satisfying click… and the labels fit all versions of the ClipSpool.

Short Video on how to easily customise your own labels.

ClipSpool Family

Check out my page if you want one of the other versions - I only post models that I have printed and tested.

This project took a long time, and many many test prints using several kilos of filament trying to get everything right. If you like the model and want to support this and future designs, you could buy us a coffee, which would be greatly appreciated. https://ko-fi.com/kobariley

Could you make a variation of the spool, please make holes in it so that when you are going to wind new filament, you can put the filament in the hole. I leave some photos for reference. This way I would avoid printing the Respooling Adapter

Honestly, this is the only reason I haven't tried it. I respool all of my filament and this would be a requirement for me.

Hi AhrDez, thanks for the comment, sorry it's taken so long to reply. I've posted a version 2 of the spool and it has an integrated clip for respooling. It's no a hole, as I'm not a huge fan of that solution. You can find the model here... https://makerworld.com/en/models/210764#profileId-230577 Hope it works out for you.

In general really nice design, would love to use it as the spool I print and use for everything, unfortunately the locking of both parts is just too lose. I printed it in PETG so I would be able to use it in a filament dryer, with this it is possible to unlock the spool with just the tiniest bit of rotational force, making it a way to large risk to use this for respooling, not to mention the AMS. I've already seen some comments with in coming undone. I think the locking tabs are too little and too close to the insertion slit. There is barely a millimeter wide ridge preventing the spool from unlocking.

I printed 3 of them, 2 are working fine, one is for trash after getting unlocked 2 times in ams

Printed and put a Bambu refill in it. I haven't printed with it yet but it looks like it will be fine. I like the built-in filament clip, it works well.

Fantastic model, easy print, perfect fit. It manages Bambu refills better than an original Bambu spool does. The incorporated filament clip is genius and I love the label option. This is definitely my go to spool now.

Respooling Adapter
Works really good once installed on Bambu spool, however seems a little small and have to sand the inside to get onto spool. Maybe resize a % larger? Printed in PLA Matt Charcoal

No size problems for me, but the groove for inserting the filament on this part is far too fragile and broke after the first insertion.

Hi, does anyone else have problems with the two halves comming apart whilst in the AMS?. I'm also getting a lot of instances where the filament slips down the side & it all gets knotted up. Will get better pics later.
