Description

I tried another spool winder but found it finicky and delicate.

I designed this winder from scratch to be simple and robust, using the same self reversing leadscrew mechanism found on industrial cable winders

Why pick this model:

  • Prints on a single build plate
  • Doesn't require heat set inserts or exotic hardware
  • Fusion and STEP files are available, remixes welcomed
  • Generous clearances, simple mechanisms
  • Designed to be a tool, not a project

Print time:

  • ~500 grams of filament
  • ~22 hours on Bambu Lab X1
  • ~5 minute assembly
  • ~2 minute spool transfer

Hardware requirements:

Print settings:

  • Any. I used "0.16mm Optimal" in BambuSlicer with 5% adaptive cubic infill
  • Use 100% concentric infill for spindle_male_driven
  • Try the STLs if you have a problem with the 3mf files. I’ve added (xN) to each file name so you know how many to print

Materials:

  • Any. I used Polyterra and iiidmax PLA+
  • Use TPU for tpu_consumable_wiper_blade. I used Priline 98a. The wiper blades aren’t 100% required but they help keep the windings nice and tight

Assembly and usage:

  • Demo video
  • Assembly video
  • The side that says “Pastamatic" needs to face outwards, away from the spool
  • The filament needs to come in under the target spool, like this: O____O
    • [not like this: O‾”‾”‾”O]
  • The drill/driver needs to run clockwise, as though you're screwing something in
  • Accelerate slowly until the winder gets started

Change log

  • 2023-05-28
    • Initial release
  • 2023-05-29
    • Fix a minor export glitch in "leadscrew_tooth"
    • Increase the number of “pin_short” instances in the 3mf from 6x to 8x
  • 2023-05-30
    • Add a second prearranged 3mf with two plates to avoid overlap warnings
    • Disable autogenerated brims for the single plate 3mf
    • Add STLs for people who have trouble with the 3mf
  • 2023-06-03
    • Add a ring to passive_target_cradle to prevent the far end of the target spool lifting if a user lets the the drill hang loose
    • Add a pin to driven_target_cradle prevent the leadscrew popping out
    • Fix a minor clearance issue where a dovetail didn't fit quite right
  • 2023-09-30
    • Reduce chamfer on the crossbars to prevent them falling over when bed adhesion is poor
    • Add some holes to the crossbars to make them easier to screw down
    • Add some popular acessories to the all-in-one .3mf
    • Add a printable spool to the all-in-one .3mf

How to contribute:

  • Post your make, it keeps me motivated to improve the model when I see people using it!
  • Post your feedback, idea or remix in the comments!
  • There are a few improvements and accessories in development as remixes, check those out if you‘re up for the alpha/beta tester experience

THIS IS THE BEST RESPOOLER GOING!!!!!! I’ve printed them all. they have all sucked and or not worked. This was 1 plate print and worked first time without doing anything to help it. amazing design!! thank you so much for finally figuring it out! adding the motor as we speak. going to make one for my sister too

I see your spools are winding a bit lopsided like mine. Have you found a solution?

this was using a drill very fast and my first attempt, I’ve since upgraded to dual motors and the few remixed additions and rolls are perfect bow. but after I seat the spool gear I push it away from the motor as far as it can go without coming out the gear, hope that makes sense

I whipped up some shims and posted them in the remixes if you need any. They helped with my Bambu spools aligning better.

Some of the objects are very close to the boarder where I used to hold the plate. I think due to the oil from my hand, one of the part got unstick so I have to keep printing spagatti to not waste the rest of the print. The tool itself has been designed very well and worked flawlessly. Hope they will be a multi 12 hour plate version to reduce the failure cost.

Just fyi, in the Bambu interface there is a "Skip ..." option that lets you tell the printer to stop printing an individual object. Incredibly handly, but not advertised feature that will save you loads of headache! :)

Very cool Design and it was overall good to print with the submitted profiles. Only the fit of the gears in the upper section was a bit tight, but it came loose after some usage and is spinning good now. Very useful tool for respooling for the AMS.

What kind of filament is this? Is it BL PLA Basic? Looks beautiful!

The 3 gears on top in the frame - but after using it for some time, it became more loose and is running fine now. Maybe my 608 bearings i used could also have been the problem or my settings for the Extrudr PLA could have been a littlebit off.

I've used BL Basic PLA Matte in red for the frame and Extrudr PLA Nx2 in silvergrey for the gears & other parts.

Didn't print in one and it all turned out perfect, with exception of the tpu buffers...they printed beautifully (sunlu 95a) but they wont fit in the slots. 🤔

Also it would be awesome with a dual spool guide so you could run two mini spools in one hit. I had to guide this one by hand.

My TPU buffers worked well at 80% width. Impossible to use at 100% with my TPU as well.

This thing works good. I have only one complaint and that is that it doesn't have any bearing caps to hold the spool spindles down.

Good Morning, I had problems with the spindles as well. Had to print them one by one. Maybe because of my shaky table, not sure. It appears that he P1S get so excited in printing round that it goes too fast and then things shake up and start to wobble. I was able to print them, while turning down speeds to 50%

did you manually change filament or use AMS? If AMS, how did you get all pieces to transition at the same point?

The model worked well. I had some user error at first getting it put together and producing a solid spun roll but try 2 went perfect. It’s not oem but after having 2 full rolls go through the AMS with no issues I’m sold. Great job!
