Built to Flex Contest Entry: TPU Zip Chip – Customizable, Flexible Fun for Anywhere!

I'm excited to share my entry for the "Built to Flex" TPU filament contest—a fun and flexible remix of the classic Zip Chip, designed for smooth throws whether you're at the beach, lake, or park.

If you enjoy what I do, give a boost!

Why a TPU Zip Chip?

I wanted to recreate a flying disc that’s compact, easy to carry, and safe to throw around with friends. Traditional plastic chips are either too rigid or crack after a few throws, so TPU felt like the perfect solution—and it delivered!

This model adds the durability and grip you want for real-world fun, with a bonus: you can customize it with your name, friend’s name or significant other for a personal touch.

Design & Modeling

Software Used: Solidworks 2025
Design Goal: Keep the flexible edge profile for safer, smoother throws while adding a fun, durable shape.
Customization Feature: Editable text field for names or short messages—makes a great gift!

Printing the Zip Chip

Material: TPU 85-95A (flexible yet firm enough to throw well)
Printer: Bambu Lab A1
Settings:

  • Layer Height: 0.16mm
  • Infill: 20%
  • Speed: Slow (TPU-friendly settings)

Note: It can also be printed in PLA or PETG, but it will be stiffer, less durable, and not waterproof.

Key Features

  • Flexible TPU Core: Bounces back after impact and is safe for all ages.
  • Customizable Text Area: Personalize it with a name, inside joke, or nickname.
  • Water-Resistant (TPU only): Perfect for beach or lake days.
  • Compact & Portable: Throw it in a bag and you're ready for some fun.

Future Ideas

I’d love to create versions with more grip textures or glow-in-the-dark filament for nighttime play.

If you print one, let me know what you think! Suggestions for improvements or ideas for other outdoor TPU prints are always welcome.
